The 2021 World Championship is here which means tournament prop bets are also returning.
And the world is saved.
A prop bet is a wager that is not directly tied to the final score or final outcome. You’re betting on something to happen within the game. While some people scream at their monitors regarding a player getting a kill for their fantasy teams, degenerates like me are screaming at our monitors because we bet five units on a player to not get that kill because we bet on the under.
Its awesome.
Every year, unique tournament specials are offered and often times, we have a good understanding of what is likely to happen. Here are a few of those things:
You only have to get above 14.5 once. It happened at last years Worlds one time.
Legacy’s Quin “Raes” Korebrits pulled it off in a victory against SuperMassive in the play-in stages. He did it in a performance where he participated in 25 of his team’s 27 kills and only died three times. Of the participants at this years World Championship, six players can say they’ve secured 15 or more kills 2021. Two players can say they’ve done it twice — RNG’s Chen “GALA” Wei and RED Candis’ Alexandre “TitaN” Lima dos Santos.
Don’t expect it to happen on the main stage but keep your eyes out on the wildcards pulling together some incredible pop-off performances.
Once again, it only needs to happen once.
All eyes on are Gen.G in this category. It makes sense because they’ve been apart of two matches to go over the threshold this year. Funnily enough, they did it against two teams representing Korea this year — DAMWON and T1. However, T1’s game against Nongshim RedForce holds the title for longest game at just over 70 minutes.
Fortunately for viewers that will be less-than-favorable timezones, they may just luck out. The longest match last year peaked at 45 minutes between LGD and — you guessed it — Gen.G.
A statistic often defined by discipline and typically longer matches, 11.9 CS per minute is actually one of the more interesting lines to follow. It has been broken 19 times this year and predominately done by the Korean marksmen. Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon ruined the marksman party by also going over the threshold this year. At the 2020 World Championship, no one came close. The highest peak was Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu at 11.1667.
Given difference between the domestic and the international stage, it feels like too much pressure to expect this high of a performance. And more importantly, it doesn’t feel like teams will allow this to happen.
Another statistic reliant on long games, it is also one of the statistics that seemingly doesn’t happen on the Worlds stage. Two games last year managed to see 7 dragons slain. Even with there being 12 games where participants for this year’s World Championship having 8 or more dragons slain, it still feels way too unlikely to happen. It is too dependent on too many factors.
FPX are the favorites to win 2021 Worlds. It feels strange to say this given their second place finish to EDward Gaming in the LPL Summer Playoffs and the existence of DAMWON KIA. Understandably, this is why the field is listed at -275 while FPX is listed as +250 in the prop bet. With that being said, the favorites have won in two straight years.
Could it be three? As we learned with SK Telecom’s runs — probably not.
And finally, one of my favorite prop bets.
| 2020 Worlds | 2021 Season | |
| Infernal | 266 | 22516 |
| Mountain | 254 | 22110 |
| Cloud | 222 | 22192 |
| Ocean | 264 | 22492 |
Infernal dragons are commonly the most dragons taken. It is somewhat understandable given what the infernal dragon provides in terms of a buff and teams being more proactive with an infernal dragon or an ocean dragon being up. While Mountain dragons have become more lucrative and ocean dragons continue to be incredibly strong, it feels like you have to ride the hot statistic.
If you are feeling risky, all four dragons are listed at +275 and double dipping may not be a bad option.
