Jets Sign Ty Montgomery

The New York Jets have made another splash in free agency as the team signs running back Ty Montgomery to a one-year deal. Nearly a month after signing All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell, the Jets have found the player to be his back up. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the signing Thursday afternoon.

In 2018, Montgomery finished the season with the Baltimore Ravens after being traded by the Green Bay Packers.

Through six games, Montgomery only produced 83 yards on 15 carries. As for the receiving game, the pass-catching tailback had 10 receptions for 65 yards. Montgomery’s lack of production may have been the cause of Gus Edwards and Kenneth Dixon emerging as the lead backs. In addition, quarterback Lamar Jackson is a heavy part of the Baltimore running attack. Which ultimately led to limited reps for Montgomery.

Although Montgomery struggled in 2018, he has found success in previous years. The newly signed Jet was drafted as a wide receiver in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Since then, he transitioned to the running back position and posed as a receiving threat out of the backfield. In just under four years with the Packers, Montgomery caught 107 passes for 892 yards and three touchdowns.

Montgomery is expected to be the lead back up for Le’Veon Bell in New York. In addition, running backs  Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon still hold spots on the roster. The Jets now have the depth and talent in the backfield to build an effective running attack that will help their young quarterback.
