What is Courtyard.io all about?

Courtyard.io is one of the mystery box sites we eagerly recommend. It’s a collectibles marketplace built for users who’re serious about trading cards. Since its establishment in 2021, the platform has allowed users to open and trade (buy or sell) mystery boxes of graded trading cards. These include Pokémon, One Piece, sports collectibles (basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, and football), and even watches.

One interesting bit about this operator is that you don’t ever need to handle the physical product yourself (well, except for mystery boxes involving watches). If you’re curious to see how that works, the operator stores the physical collectibles and trading cards in secure vaults. Then it creates 3D representations of these assets and mints them on the blockchain, allowing you to own and trade them.

This setup actually makes sense. When you own a card on Courtyard.io, you hold an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) that represents a real physical card that’s sitting in the platform’s vault.

Then, it’s now up to you to decide what to do with that NFT. You may wish to redeem it. In that case, the physical trading card or collectible will be shipped to you. Or if you decide to make a bank on such an item, you can list it on the platform’s marketplace or trigger the instant buyback (more on this later).

For users who have spent time on a few mystery box platforms, like the one we mentioned in our Triumph Rips review, Courtyard.io is committed to transparency, which we appreciate. Before you purchase a box, the odds are disclosed so you know the chance of getting the items there.

This honesty has led to its users comprising nostalgic collectors chasing trading cards from their childhood. You’ll find crypto enthusiasts who’re keen on real-world asset (RWA) tokenization using this platform as well. It also appeals to casuals who just want the excitement of a pack reveal.

How does Courtyard.io work?

Getting started on Courtyard is actually simple. Even if you have no prior crypto knowledge, you can simply sign in with your email. Once you’re logged in, an embedded crypto wallet is created for you.

Similar to our experience when making Boxed.GG review, all you have to do is simply browse the available packs, pick the one that matches your budget, and make your purchase.

Before committing to a purchase, the platform uses blockchain to execute a provably random selection from an item pool. So, when your card is finally revealed, you can verify the outcome on-chain. This removes the need to blindly trust a server (which most mystery box platforms use) that can’t be audited or verified.

With your item now revealed, you can do any of the following:

  • Redeem the card by having the physical item shipped to your home address
  • List it on Courtyard.io’s marketplace at your preferred price, with 0% seller fees attached.
  • Sell it back to Courtyard immediately at 90% of the current fair market value.

The third option is what makes Courtyard a distinctive mystery box site. When a random pull occurs, and it’s something that doesn’t match your fancy, you can simply sell it back to Courtyard and receive 90% of its fair market value. But do note that a 6% fee is applied to the transaction. This brings your total reduction to around 16% (10% below market value plus the 6% fee).

For instance, if you pull a Pokémon card that you already own, you can sell it back to the operator. If the perceived market value is $500, Courtyard.io will pay you $450 (90% of $500). Then, applying the 6% fee ($30), your final payout would be $420.

Please note that you don’t need a Courtyard.io promo code to unlock this feature; it’s built into the platform. So you can worry less about keeping any unwanted trading cards and cash in on them as quickly as possible.

Different types of mystery boxes in Courtyard.io

From our tests, we found a few types of Courtyard.io mystery boxes, and getting your hands on them can be a worthwhile experience for you on this site. Let’s take a look at them.

Physical mystery boxes

Packs here are priced from $25 for entry-level boxes up to several hundred dollars (or equivalent) for higher-grade boxes. When you select a pack, you’ll see the possible items you can unlock and the probability breakdown for each.

This feature helps you decide whether such a mystery box is worth the cost. You can see the chase cards at the top of the rarity ladder, the mid-tier outcomes, and the common pulls, all with their associated probabilities disclosed upfront.

And one interesting thing about the physical mystery boxes here is that these respected authenticators grade them:

  • PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)
  • CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)
  • BGS (Beckett Grading Services).

As such, there are no counterfeit cards or damaged items when you decide to ship a product to your doorstep. What you pull is what you’ll get in your order.

We should note one thing: during our tests, most of our pulls landed on common items. We cannot fault the system, because that’s how probability works. However, the 90% instant buyback comes in handy. You take a modest cashout and move on to the next mystery box.

Crypto mystery boxes

Thanks to Courtyard.io’s blockchain layer, every pack and trading card is tokenized. As such, ownership is recorded on-chain. This makes transfers borderless and easy. And since each tokenized item (NFT) is backed by a real physical card sitting in a secure vault, there’s a fair market value attached to it.

And one interesting thing here is that you don’t need to know what a crypto wallet seed phrase is, connect a MetaMask wallet (a crypto wallet), or pay for gas fees. Courtyard handles all these technicalities behind the scenes. So anyone buying their first pack wouldn’t realize they’re interacting with the blockchain.

Of course, the platform lets you connect your crypto wallet, if you have one. And for crypto enthusiasts like us, the NFTs you receive are compatible with OpenSea, a popular NFT marketplace. As such, you can list and trade your tokenized cards on such a platform, set your desired price, and receive payment.

Luxury watches

Courtyard.io has provided luxury watch packs for timepiece lovers. You pay a fixed price and get an authentic watch. Each timepiece has a predetermined fair market value, and depending on the disclosed probability tiers, the watch you receive may be worth $5,000 to $100,000.

That said, please note that the specific model and value tier are determined via a randomized allocation process. The reason is that highly sought-after watches are not readily available at retail. On Courtyard.io, you now have access to these rare pieces at a fixed purchase price, with no bidding wars.

Interestingly, the operator showcases the major brands you’ll find in a watch box. So, let’s say you decide to purchase a $10,000 watch box, you’ll find timepieces from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet. As such, you have a sense of the brands available in the pool before you purchase. And just like physical and crypto mystery boxes, these watches are authenticated before they’re released for sale.

As noted by the platform, all sales are final. So, if the item is shipped to your address and you wish to return it, you cannot. However, Courtyard.io includes a buyback offer that is available for 7 days after purchase. You can also list the watch in the marketplace at your fixed price with 0% seller fees.

Payment methods at Courtyard.io

During our review, we found four methods to fund your account:

  • Apple Pay
  • Credit cards
  • Debit cards
  • Cryptocurrency (USD Coin only)

Bank transfers are not supported here. In our opinion, that serves the needs of most users on the platform.

If you prefer cryptocurrency, you’ll need to send USDC from a crypto exchange or personal crypto wallet to your Courtyard wallet. There’s also an option to link your crypto wallet to your Courtyard profile, though you’ll need to download the platform’s mobile app (available on iOS and Android).

The funding process usually takes less than a minute, thanks to the platform’s use of the Polygon network. But when there’s high network traffic, allow up to 15 minutes for the funds to arrive. Interestingly, Courtyard operates at 0% seller fees, so there’s no commission on sales.

Courtyard.io bonuses and promotions

Courtyard.io offers a few region-specific bonuses and promotions. If the location you’re registering from is eligible, you could claim a Courtyard.io free pack. This item lets you have a feel of what the platform offers and how each pull works.

There are other promotions in the form of raffle draws. They’re time-limited, so you may not see them by the time you’re reading this article. Not to worry, the operator makes sure to list their ongoing promotions whenever you log in to the platform. As you do, don’t forget to make use of this offer to elevate your unboxing experience.

Courtyard.io mobile experience

Courtyard has a native app that is available on iOS and Android devices. Every function available on desktop, such as pack browsing, purchasing, revealing, marketplace listing, and buyback, works well in the app. We didn’t encounter any lag while browsing and revealing different packs.

Courtyard.io customer service support

Courtyard provides support through live chat, a functional help center, and email ([email protected]). For routine questions involving payments, shipping, and the marketplace, the help center provides a helpful guide on these sections.

But if you have other questions not provided in the help center, you can contact the operator via live chat. The human agents were happy to respond to our query on deposits, and their responses were professional. You can also reach out to the operator via email. The response time can be slower here compared to the live chat option.

Is Courtyard.io legit?

Yes, it is. Courtyard.io is a San Francisco-incorporated company. It doesn’t operate under a traditional gaming license because it positions itself as a collectibles marketplace. As such, its regulatory framing is retail and eCommerce.

Security-wise, Courtyard.io’s architecture consists of three components:

  • Smart contracts, which handle ERC-721 NFTs
  • A web frontend for users to mint NFTs
  • A centralized backend that manages inventory and authorizes minting NFTs representing that inventory.

It would interest you to note that every NFT minted is backed 1:1 by a physical asset stored securely in a vault.

Feel free to register on Courtyard.io and start trading the available mystery boxes

We had a swell time reviewing Courtyard.io. The platform is a blockchain-backed operator with vaulted physical trading cards, transparent odds, and a combined marketplace. For collectors who want the fun of the pull without the risk of getting completely burned, the platform’s buyback feature protects you.

That said, the platform offers a randomized outcome experience, so most of your pulls may be modest. Therefore, go in with a budget and enjoy the experience. When you're ready to take your chance at ripping mystery boxes, hit the banners on this page and create a Courtyard.io account.

Courtyard.io review FAQs

🎁What types of cards are available on Courtyard.io?

Courtyard currently offers graded Pokémon, One Piece, Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, and Football trading cards. PSA, CGC, or BGS grade cards before entering the platform's pool, and values range from a few dollars for common cards to hundreds of dollars for rare high-grade slabs.

🎁Do I need crypto experience to use Courtyard.io?

Not at all. Courtyard automatically creates an embedded blockchain wallet when you sign up with just your email address, and the platform covers all gas fees on your behalf. You can pay with a standard credit or debit card without ever touching a crypto interface. Advanced users who want to can still connect external wallets and trade their NFTs on OpenSea.
