Yankee Betting Explained 2024: What Is a Yankee Bet?

Publish Date:19/05/2023
Fact checked by: Heather Williams

The Yankee bet is one of the best horse racing bets but can apply to other popular sports. It's a little more elaborate than the regular moneyline or point spreads, but it's still easy to grasp the idea of it.

Yankee betting is explained as a bet accumulator that can pay huge amounts if you're lucky. It requires you to place multiple wagers, 11 of them, so you may need the assistance of a bonus deal to maximize the potential of this bet. Our exclusive TGHSOCIAL is a fantastic bonus example that you can claim by joining Stake.

Yankee betting meaning

As we've established, the Yankee bet features 11 different bets from four selections. This wager format includes six doubles, four trebles, and a one four-fold accumulator. You can play a win Yankee or an each-way Yankee – more on this later.

Yankee bets are quite generous with payouts because they are combination bets. However, your returns depend on the number of winning selections and the odds values. Generally, you get a return from a Yankee bet if at least two selections win.

Here's a table of how the bets are spread out in Yankee Betting:

Type of Bet Bets Selection 1 Selection 2 Selection 3 Selection 4
Doubles 1

Should you place a Yankee bet?

Placing a Yankee is a great way to bet on horse racing or greyhound racing events, especially if you're unsure which stallion will likely win. This bet covers all possible combinations of your four selections. Unlike a traditional parlay bet where you lose your entire bet if one leg fails, this one will offer a payout as long as you get two selections right. So it bends the rules of sports betting players’ favor. Naturally, you'll only get a small payout this way. You can win significantly if you get lucky with most or all of your selections.

You should be aware that placing a Yankee costs more than a traditional bet. You'd need to stake on each of the 11 bets. So, if you were to stake $3 on every combination, you'll spend a total of $33 in wagering. That way, each Yankee bet variation is covered.

Are there any drawbacks to Yankee betting?

For starters, the large bet may be a disadvantage for low rollers, although high rollers will have a different opinion. A second drawback is that each bet on a Yankee has the same stake value. If you choose to place a $1 for one, you must place $1 for all. As such, you can't place a higher wager on a double or treble you think has better odds of winning.

What is an each-way Yankee?

The each-way Yankee typically means that all bets have two distinct forecasts β€” a win bet and a place bet. So, instead of your ticket featuring 11 wagers, it'll have 22 different bets. The stake on each-way Yankees is double the amount tied to normal Yankees.

Each-way Yankee markets are available at the best betting sites and are typically provided for horse racing and greyhound racing. Even if your chosen horse or greyhound doesn't rank amongst the winning spots, you'll receive payouts as long as they place.

Super Yankee and Lucky 15: How they differ from the Yankee betting system

Also known as the Canadian bet, Super Yankees are similar to standard Yankee bets. However, there's one major difference. Rather than players backing four selections (as with the Yankees), Canadian bets/Super Yankees require bettors to wager on five different selections.

On the other hand, The Lucky 15 also uses four selections, like the Yankee bet. However, as its naming suggests, the Lucky 15 features 11 bets and adds four separate singles for each selection. Thus, it includes a sum total of 15 wagers.

Using a Yankee bet calculator to determine payouts

Figuring out your potential profit on Yankees is different from a regular single bet. Fortunately, you can use a Yankee bet calculator to do this. There are several resources online that offer Yankee bet calculators and converters. You just have to punch in the variables as though you were using a regular calculator. Here's how to go about it:

  • Choose an odds format - American, Fractional, or Decimal odds will all be supported
  • Select between Stake Per Bet or Total Stake
  • Once you've made your choice, input your preferred wagering amount
  • Insert the odds for each wager
  • The calculator gets to work. You can choose if your bet is lost, won, or voided
  • Finally, you can see what you stand to win
  • Hit the Reset button to begin another calculation

Conclusion – Cover all possible outcomes with Yankee betting

Yankees have their benefits and drawbacks, but overall, there's no reason why you shouldn't try these bets. They cover all possible results of your selections, thereby increasing your chances of landing a win. The increased total bet may prevent you from making a profit if you don't win multiple bets. However, there's also the each-way Yankee that'll pay as long as your selections place, even if they don't win outright. Remember to use the Yankee bet calculator to check your returns before placing a wager covering your selections.
