Where Is Peer-to-Peer Betting Legal 2025: Insights into Permissible Jurisdictions

Publish Date: 10/05/2024

Welcome to the world of Peer-to-Peer sports betting. Some of you may be wondering, what does that mean exactly. Well, It is a form of betting that involves multiple individuals who can place bets without the need for a sportsbook or any other go-between whether that be in person or online. This is a form of betting that has existed for many years but is becoming more popular as Sports Betting becomes more prominent.

The reason for its growing popularity is that there is less interference and there is an ability to gamble on sports that maybe you enjoy but they are less popular in certain areas. This has allowed for people to bet with their friends in a more intimate way and has helped P2P sports betting cultivate a nice following.

The concerns with it though largely stem from the way it is being used. Because of the P2P portion of this, there are no third-parties involved. This has become an issue as many of these apps are legally not able to transfer money directly from one person to another. The reason why is that people can use and abuse this system to sneak money around for nefarious purposes without much regulation or tracking.

This is why we are looking at where it is legal to Peer-to-Peer bet and how it is allowed.

Globally, the legal landscape for gambling and sports betting as a whole is starting to open up. For so long, many cultures and countries were very leery of gambling. Much of this had to do with religious and moral reasons. Or at least that was what was shown to the public. Many believed it was due to governments wanting their pieces of the pie. Whatever the reason, the legal landscape is continuing to open up.

When wondering where is peer-to-peer betting legal it is not overly popular yet so not too many places. It is specifically legal in either parts or all of the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Germany. There are others too but those  are the bigger jurisdictions it is permissible.

The biggest issue with P2P sports betting in particular is the regulatory bodies’ tole in overseeing these platforms. There has yet to really be substantial headway in gaps, especially for the United States. The reason is that it is hard to regulate without the third-party approved apps and other systems being put in place.

What it is going to take is a much stronger cultural shift toward this style of sports betting in order for the legalities of it to either change or at least become a bit more lenient. There are certainly economic considerations that need to be made when looking into peer to peer sports betting. Mainly because you can already see how much of an impact gambling as a whole has had on the wider US economy and especially in the sports where all of it is legal. This generally helps the P2P cause when looking ahead.

Permissible Jurisdictions for Peer-to-Peer Betting

As stated above there are some countries that we can see that allow for sports betting. Here is a deeper look into each of the bigger countries individually.

United Kingdom

The UK has a much more robust gambling system, especially when it comes to sports gambling. A lot of this comes from betting on football (American Soccer). It is completely legal in the UK but it is also extremely regulated. There are many different bookmakers who are available to players both online and in person. This has set up a much easier transition for P2P betting.

Australia

This situation in Australia is very similar to that of the UK. There are plenty of avenues to sports gamble legally. This comes from sports like again football, in both senses and then also games like rugby and cricket.

Canada

Most sports betting and gambling in Canada is based on each of the provinces. Some provinces do not allow it or have very strict regulations and guidelines in place. Others like British Colombia, Quebec and Ontario are a bit more open to it. They allow for official government-regulated online sports betting options.

United States

The US has a lot of different laws. The laws for sports betting varies by state. Some of them are completely legalized for all types of betting. While others will only allow certain types of betting. Some only allow for it in regulated casinos while others are fine with online. Some places even have their own betting guides to help you. As of now New Jersey is the only state where Peer-to-Peer Sports Betting is allowed.

Germany

But Is sports betting legal in Germany? Well the easy answer for this is yes, sports betting is legal in Germany. The more complicated answer is that it is but there are extremely strict regulations and licensing requirements. Only those who have approved licenses, which are hard to get, are allow to offer sports betting services of any kind.

Let’s take a look at the United States for example when it comes to the legal landscape of sports betting. As of the initial writing of this guide, there are 38 different states that allow for sports betting. There are five that have it on the ballot and a few where there is either no legislation or it is likely not going to be legal soon.

This has been a very drastic change from when it was mainly just Nevada and New Jersey that allowed for any sports gambling. Once the laws were reinterpreted or more appropriately understood in a different way back in 2018, things have progressed quite quickly to where there are only 12 states left that do not have sports betting of any kind.

The Peer-to-Peer market is very different. As mentioned previously, this is really only legal or at least allowed in New Jersey. While the government won’t stop someone from betting their friend $10 on a football game, doing so with a bigger group and online is the problem. It is why when asking is peer to peer betting legal in the United States, the answer is technically yet.

This is partially because of regulation for keeping people’s money safe and then also because the US government wants their piece of the pie. Once this is wired out and the laws are changed or maybe less strict on how third-party apps can act in this way, the US should see a rise in P2P betting across the nation.

Conclusion

When looking at where Peer-to-Peer Betting is legal in 2024, it is not hard to see that it is quickly gaining popularity and should be available in more countries even as this year goes on. The main issues have been the regulation and just the general overseeing of things that are keeping P2P sports betting from really taking off. Many countries around the world are opening up to sports betting in general and this means that the groundwork is being laid for this newer form of online gambling to go into the market.

The future is certainly looking bright and it will be on individuals as well as the peer to peer betting app and exchanges to bring awareness to their communities and different governments. The exchanges and apps may have to make changes to adapt to the laws or the government may make news laws that allow for things as they are with just a bit more oversight. Either way, P2P sports betting will be coming to a community near you very soon.
