People who are new to sports betting might be confused by all of the different options they have. This will not only be when it comes to their choice of sportsbook but also the different markets that are available to place that first sports bet – like correct score and betting under & over.
This guide will give you a betting over under definition so you can use this market to your advantage. It will also cover some markets that you might also consider as a straight or parlay bet.
Sports betting is wagering on not only the outcome of a sporting event but anything that happens within that event. This could relate to the score at any given point or the individual performance of a single player, like how many points they score. Each of these is called a market; as you can imagine, there are potentially hundreds of different markets for each sporting event.
One of the most popular markets in any sporting event is betting under & over a certain score, especially in events where the overall outcome might not offer value to bettors. However, many many more people could use this market if they had a better grasp of how it works.
As the name suggests, betting under & over is trying to predict whether something will happen more or less than a specified number of times during a match, game, or tournament. This can apply to anything you want, provided the sportsbook has a market for it.
For example, you can wager over/under the number of goals scored in a soccer match, the number of free kicks, corners, or even the number of fouls and red and yellow cards. If you look at any sportsbook, you will see that the over under number will never be a whole number, but instead more like 1.5, 2.5, or 3.5. This is because nobody can score half a goal, or get half a red card, so the result will always be under or over the specified number and not the same.
Placing an over under bet is as simple as placing any other type of bet at the best betting sites. You will pick your sport from the left-hand menu in the sportsbook. As with the earlier example, we will pick a soccer match. Once the match is selected, the overall result market (win/lose/draw) is likely to be the first thing you see with the correct score markets just underneath.
Just below this is likely to be the market for under over goals for the match. So, if you predict there will be three or more goals, you will select ‘over 2.5 goals’, enter your stake, and your bet is placed. The odds in these markets tend not to move a great deal before the event starts, so you have quite a large window to place your bet in.
If you were to bet on the same match while it was in progress, however, that would not be the case. The odds here would be much more fluid, depending on the events in the match. If, for instance, instead of placing your over 2.5 goals bet at the start you did it when the score was 1 - 1 then the odds you get will be much shorter because two goals have been scored and both teams might be going for the winner.
On the other hand, if the score after 78 minutes of a 90-minute game was still 0 - 0 you would get very good odds on your over 2.5 goals because it is now much less likely than it was at the start.
Under over bets can be placed as part of hedge betting systems, and they can also be used as part of a parlay bet. In the example above, your over 2.5 goals wager could be combined with a bet on the first scorer, or the correct score market to increase your potential winnings – although of course, as with any type of betting, winning is never guaranteed.
Now that you have had over under betting explained, you can add it to your list of regular wagers if you choose. The more wagers you understand, the better your betting experience can be because you can find points of interest when the event looks totally one-sided or is over as a contest.
Of course, this is not the only market we have online betting guides for, and by checking out the rest of the site you will be able to see what else we have available to improve your bettor's education.

Every sportsbook has a wide range of markets across a number of sports, and because the sports are different, many of the markets will be different too. Once you have read our latest guide you will be able to see the type of events where betting under & over is most likely to be available.Â
