Fantasy Sports vs Esports 2025: Understanding the Key Differences and Similarities

Publish Date: 10/05/2024
Fact checked by: Graham Stevans

For many newcomers, Fantasy Sports and Esports may seem very similar. In actuality, they are extremely different. This guide, like other betting guides, is here to help you understand what those differences are and how each of the online sports became as popular as they are. Make sure to buckle up as this could get fun.

Let’s start by getting the actual definitions out there. This will clear up the majority of the confusion. Fantasy Sports are where you act as the manager of a team of players in a given sport or competition. You are not involved in playing at all.

Esports on the other hand is a form of competitive video games where humans play other humans. There are actual games and competitions based on skill and strategy within the game more so than waiting and seeing how a certain player does in their own competitive game.

Both of these have been growing in popularity at a frankly absurd rate. The Esports industry has slowed down a bit but was increasing at a major clip and was a $1 billion industry. As for Fantasy Sports, the addition of daily fantasy in particular has been massive and only increased due to the gambling laws changing in 2018. This can be seen in many sports and has lead to guide like daily fantasy baseball strategies and more.

History and Evolution

When looking at the history of Fantasy Sports it is a very interesting one. For the longest time, people actually would use pen and paper to fill out their lineups and have to make trades on the phone while informing the commissioner during the process. The scores would be shown and told each week with the commissioner keeping tabs on things. You thought your commish could screw you over now? Try then!

For Esports, video games have been a pretty big thing since the 1980s. This includes competitions even in arcades. Then as the Internet became more widely accessible and faster, online competitive gaming was possible. This made Esports skyrocket and continue its climb to inevitably be one of the biggest sports in the world.

Both Fantasy Sports and Esports have benefitted greatly from the internet. Truthfully, Esports wouldn’t even exist without the internet and with the invention of daily fantasy, Fantasy Sports have truly taken off to unknown heights. Which is why so many people want to know how to play daily fantasy sports. They both have similar trajectories, up, but their outcomes and what they become will be completely different.

Conceptual Framework

When looking at Fantasy Sports, you are drafting real players for imaginary teams. That is why it is called fantasy sports. There are also tools you can use to help you win them such as, fantasy football draft software. You are not actually playing and you are not the professional.

The mechanics and rules are fairly simple for Fantasy Sports. You will draft players alongside your league-mates for a predetermined number of rounds with a predetermined number of positions available. From there,  you play someone each week and try to maximize your score based on the point system and type of league you are in.

There are redraft leagues that draft new teams every year. Dynasty league which keep the same teams every year and drafts the new rookies. Then there are variations of those two with different rules. One such example is a last-longer league where you draft and then the lowest-scoring team is eliminated each week until there is only one winner.

Esports on the other hand are exactly like regular sports but online. There are even esports based around popular sports video games. The players are actually controlling the characters or players and using their skills and strategies to win the game.

The more popular titles are games like VALORANT, Counter-Strike 2, DOTA 2, Call of Duty and League of Legends. Each of these are a different variation of similar genres. Some are shooters while others are multiplayer online battle arenas. They all include teams of a certain amount of players and are playing to win a title.

Future Prospects

In the very near future and truthfully already there are Fantasy Esports leagues. Similar to a game like Fantasy Football, you can play fantasy VALORANT or League of Legends. There, you draft players just like in football and get points based on things like kills, assists and so much more. Many are hoping it will be on espn fantasy games eventually as well. It is truly a combination of both worlds and one that many people should be giving a chance.

Conclusion

As a quick recap, Fantasy Sports are based on real players from sports teams being drafted to imaginary teams that gather points. These points are based on the statistics of what the players do in their sports and can help you win games, leagues and championships where you face other people who have similar teams.

Esports are where people actually play video games in a competitive nature. They control different characters or even players from sports video games and try to win the game based on skills and strategy.

There is a combination of both called Fantasy Esports and that alone should indicate how they are both separate if there is something that needs to combine both.

Hopefully, you have found the difference. Both have very bright futures thanks to the internet growing as it has. It is truly only a matter of time until they are commonplace amongst all of society.
