What makes a sport appealing for bettors?

Sports betting has been around as long as the sports that are bet on; some are better suited than others, and some are more appealing. What makes this difference? How does a sport appeal to the betting market?

College leagues

College sporting leagues have been a big part of American culture for a long time. Why is this? Well, part of their popularity can be attributed to the fact that they are much more localized than nationwide leagues like the NFL. Your hometown is likely to have some college-level sports teams that you’d be able to go and watch for much less than a national side. You are likely to have one only NFL team in your entire state, making it logistically much more complicated to go and see one of their matches.

This localized, more personal nature of college-level sports makes betting on them more appealing, as it can be a lot easier to become invested in any given match.

If you are new to the space and looking for the best college sports to bet on, this is a great resource to have access to, as it can help you see which college sports you think you’d most enjoy betting on.

Great integration

Something that all bettors will be looking for in a sport is seamless integration of a betting platform. Even if everything else about a sport makes it great for betting, if the process of actually placing your bet is convoluted, then it could all be for nothing.

A great example of this is mid-game mobile betting. If a player is at home, relaxing and watching a sports game, it should be easy for them to pick up their phone or laptop and seamlessly place a bet on whatever they choose.

Simple betting

This one is admittedly more down to personal preference, but a sport with simple, easy-to-understand rules and regulations could prove to be a big hit with the betting community. Take horse racing, for example – anyone can watch one race and understand what’s going on; it’s simple: the first horse to cross the line wins the race. Of course, it can get much more in-depth than this, with understanding the details of each and every different horse, checking the records of its trainer and jockey, and even taking note of weather conditions. But it is an easy sport for a beginner to pick up, which can make it very appealing.

Complex betting

Contrary to the previous point, more complex sports can also be appealing to a different kind of bettor. It’s interesting learning the ins and outs of any given sport, betting on small details  and spending time going through researching all of the teams you may want to bet on, and what part of the game you would most like to bet on. This freedom and player agency can be really appealing for a bettor.

Why has the betting community become so big?

The sports betting industry seems to have exploded onto the scene, making a big impact and leaving many people asking the question: Why is it so big?

There are many reasons for this, but one of the main ones is its ability to make any sports game an interesting watch, as you could have a bet on that keeps your eyes glued to the screen. Whether it be the Super Bowl or a lesser-known college-level game, the level of excitement will always be the same.

Another reason for the sports betting industry’s growth is the symbiotic relationship it has with sports as a whole. More people placing bets means a lot more eyes on a lot more games. More eyes on sports games means more users on betting sites. They complement each other, allowing both to grow.

What does the future hold?

The future looks bright for the sports betting industry, especially in the US. Not so long ago, this wasn’t the case, with many different states not allowing players the freedom to bet on sports. This has changed due to the 2018 bill that was passed by the Supreme Court.

Not all US states offer fully legal sports betting; only 38 do, but this is bound to change in today’s modern landscape. It would not be surprising if we see all 50 states legalize sports betting in the coming years.

We are starting to see more mainstream incorporation of online sports betting, with certain celebrity endorsements, pitch-side advertisements and more. This, of course, is bringing more eyes and more money to the industry, which is great as we will likely see more betting integration into more sports.

Conclusion

There are many things that can make a sport appealing to the betting community, from more localized teams to better integration. A lot comes down to personal preference and what a player wants from the bets they are making, whether that be something more straightforward and easier to pick up, or something more intricate.
