Jumping right into public backlash, Microsoft has just released a statement about Xbox using AI in the future development of their game titles to “empower game creators with the potential of Generative AI” They’ll be partnering with Inworld AI to create game development tools for Xbox that will allow developers to create AI-enhanced characters and other dialogue features. Regardless of the reasons, fans took to the internet asking Microsoft the same question, “Why?”.

Let’s first address what Microsft plans to accomplish by having Xbox use AI when developing its games. Microsoft plans to have:

Some video game developers for some reason just love to dive head-first into controversial waters when it comes to controversial subjects. Remember when NFTs were being implemented into games? The pressure caused by community backlash caused some games to be completely scrapped. With how controversial AI has been in 2023, being involved in subjects such as theft and job replacements, it’s shocking to see Microsft announce such a plan.
“We want to help make it easier for developers to realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today, and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection, and more,” – Xbox Gaming AI General Manager Haiyan Zhang.
When telling long-time gamers that their future titles could be implementing AI for something as major as dialogue in games the reaction isn’t bound to be pretty. Many gamers showcased their disapproval online stating that this was Microsoft just being “Lazy” or about how the future of Xbox’s titles was going to be made off of “Stolen Assets”.
Of course, there are gamers and other AI developers who welcome the change, but there’s no denying that the majority want absolutely nothing to do with AI writing their video games.
