UK May Represent Less Than 5% of Global Video Games Market Revenue

Publish Date: August 8, 2023

In recent years, the gaming industry has experienced significant growth, with millions of players around the world indulging in immersive gaming experiences. However, recent reports reveal the United Kingdom’s insignificant presence in the global market.

Understanding the UK’s video games market

The UK’s gaming community is vibrant and continues to see growth due to the rise of mobile gaming, such as Riot Games announcing its plans to move VALORANT to mobile devices, and the growing interest in esports tournaments.

“Gaming is the biggest form of entertainment in the UK, with consumers spending more money on gaming than pay TV, video streaming, cinema, music, or books. In 2022, around £5 billion was spent on gaming in the UK,” the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) wrote in a recent press release.

Despite video gaming being a popular pastime for UK citizens, the CMA inquiry reveals the UK’s representation in the global video games market may be as low as 3%. The five billion GBP spent by UK consumers in 2022 is relatively negligible compared to the $184 billion (USD) generated globally.

Impact of global deals on the UK gaming landscape

Beyond the challenges posed by international competition, the impact of global deals has become a subject of concern. An independent panel of experts conducting a Phase 2 investigation has raised questions about the potential consequences of such deals on the UK gaming industry. They highlight the impact of British game developers being acquired by larger foreign companies, such as the recent example of Codemasters being purchased by American company Electronic Arts (EA).

Martin Coleman, chair of the panel, emphasised the importance of safeguarding UK gamers from adverse effects resulting from these global deals. He warns that repercussions may include higher prices, fewer choices, or reduced innovation.

Nurturing growth in UK gaming

The UK gaming industry continues to exhibit promising potential for growth, but it faces its share of challenges. To bolster its representation in the global video games market, fostering an environment of innovation and creativity is paramount. The country boasts a wealth of talent in game development, design, and technology, making it crucial to nurture this talent and provide ample support to startups and indie game developers. By doing so, the UK can cultivate a thriving gaming ecosystem that resonates with a diverse global audience and captivates players worldwide.

A vital aspect of this growth also lies in ensuring players have access to reputable and informative sources for well-informed gaming decisions. Boylesports, a well-respected UK-based casino, offers diverse game options, frequent promotions, and amplifies UK developers’ work to reach a global audience, as reviewed at https://www.casinohawks.com/reviews/boylesports

The UK’s gaming community must seize the opportunity to cultivate a strong presence in the global market. By fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration, the nation can pave the way for groundbreaking gaming experiences that captivate players worldwide.
