Falcons closed IEM Cologne 2026 with a 3-0 sweep of FURIA, winning Mirage, Anubis, and Inferno 13-8 inside a packed LANXESS Arena. For NiKo, the trophy ended a 3,067-day wait for a Major title. For Falcons, it completed a rebuild that had taken barely two months since karrigan replaced kyxsan and zonic reset the team’s preparation after a series of grand final defeats. The view that Falcons simply benefited from the bracket overlooks the specific decisions that produced the title.
Falcons signed karrigan on April 20 and moved kyxsan to the bench. Since rebuilding the roster in January 2025, Falcons had reached seven grand finals and won only PGL Bucharest. NiKo later said karrigan was the only IGL (in-game leader) Falcons were prepared to sign. The transfer reunited karrigan with NiKo after FaZe and with zonic ten years after their Astralis period. zonic then gave karrigan control of the calling system.
zonic brought a structured approach to Counter-Strike. karrigan added creative calls and mid-round adjustments. zonic could restore more structure when the team’s play became too loose. Falcons then began converting the close series that had previously ended in defeat. The narrative changed from chokers (teams that fail to close decisive matches) to overtime specialists (teams that repeatedly win after regulation ends in a tie). Cologne became karrigan’s fourth Major final across five Majors. His reunion with NiKo and zonic ended with a Major trophy.
Under karrigan, Falcons redistributed roles across the lineup. m0NESY kept the freedom to react to openings, join rotations, and take responsibility in the chaotic mid-rounds created by the team’s movement. He explained that the rotations and chaos matched his natural style and allowed him to contribute throughout the round. m0NESY finished Cologne as the MVP (best player of the event) and won his first trophy with Falcons after eight grand final appearances. His larger role also allowed NiKo to become the second star while adapting to new responsibilities.
kyousuke’s playoff rating (HLTV’s composite performance metric) rose from 1.03 under kyxsan to 1.25 in his first two events with karrigan. He recorded a 1.30 rating across the LANXESS Arena matches, the highest figure of any player on stage, and delivered six strong maps against top-five opposition, including NAVI. The semifinal placed him against Spirit and donk, who had beaten Falcons in the PGL Astana final. Falcons won the series 2-1 after overtime on Dust2 and reached the organization’s first Major final. Before the playoffs, kyousuke linked his form to the mood and energy inside the team. He said karrigan helped every player during matches, brought jokes and positive energy, and supported him when he started a map poorly. kyousuke also accepted that he might have gained more motivation after karrigan joined and said he wanted to improve at every tournament.
Before BLAST Open Rotterdam in March, zonic restricted how much Falcons could play FACEIT (a third-party matchmaking platform). He believed excessive FACEIT play created bad habits that carried over into official matches, especially unnecessary duels and individual decisions made without utility or support. The players were unhappy with the restriction, and the change became visible through their reduced match totals on the platform. zonic wanted the team to spend the three weeks before Rotterdam working on communication, discipline, and repeated mistakes from playoff rounds. Practice habits differed across elite players. donk played many pugs (pickup games), while ropz played almost none.
Falcons replaced FACEIT hours with team practice, DM (deathmatch) routines, and setup checks before LANs. At this level, no detail is treated as minor, from the structure of a DM routine to resolution, sensitivity, and the small differences between CS2 pro crosshairs. The goal was structured repetition during hours previously spent in public matches. zonic also wanted players to stop taking the next duel when they already held a useful position or still had utility available. The reset addressed decisions repeated across months and moved beyond the PARIVISION loss. Falcons trained communication in equal-player situations, after-plants, and site retakes, where the same mistakes had returned under playoff pressure.
Falcons entered the playoffs against two leading opponents carrying specific problems into their series. Vitality had opened Stage 3 with a 13-5 win over FUT, then lost to 9z before meeting Falcons in the quarter-finals. Falcons handed them a second consecutive quarter-final exit. Vitality had already won IEM Krakow and completed their second ESL Grand Slam earlier in the season. Spirit reached the semi-finals with a 6-0 record across Stages 2 and 3. Their coaching staff was absent from the venue. donk later explained that no coach was available to call timeouts, identify mistakes, or help the team regain control during difficult rounds. Falcons still faced the tournament’s hardest playoff route, with Vitality arriving after the 9z loss and Spirit playing without their coaches.
NiKo’s career record now includes a Major title. For Falcons, Cologne turned years of roster investment and repeated changes into the organization’s first Major championship. The result confirmed karrigan as the IGL chosen to complete the project and gave zonic his sixth Major as a coach. Falcons enter the second half of 2026 as Major champions. The remaining events will show whether the team can maintain this level over a longer stretch of the season.
