Pokémon’s Response to Palworld

Publish Date: January 27, 2024

Trainers, tamers, and every animal lover, hope all is well. Palworld has been out for a few days. And players have made sure that it became the best-received creature tamers on Steam. However, this did not stop it from receiving controversy and hate from Pokémon fans who noticed design similarities. After the forefront of this backlash, Pokémon’s response to Palworld is now a thing.

Pokémon Intends to Investigate Palworld for Signs of Infringement

Early on January 25, the Pokémon company officially published a statement in response to the concerns of plagiarism that fans brought to their attention. Despite not calling anyone out by name, it is obvious that they directed the statement at Palworld’s creatures. This article pasted a paraphrase of the statement they released:

“We have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024,” The Pokemon Company wrote. “The company has not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game. We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon. We will continue to cherish and nurture each and every Pokémon and its world, and work to bring the world together through Pokémon in the future.”

Most gamers think that they are addressing Palworld itself, but the translation is vague. Other X users have posited that they are referring to the fan-made mod that puts Pokémon models over the palmons.

It’s not the only time Nintendo has not been receptive to fan-made content. On top of that, most cases trying to argue about Palworld being a Pokémon rip-off only go as far as similarities with certain designs.

There is some evidence coming to light about some of the claims being fallacious, but there will be more of that in another piece.

Conclusion

While Pokémon’s response to Palworld is legit, the intent is vague enough to where they may not find anything substantial. It’s taken them this long to respond. And the only time they did was after a Pokémon mod was released for it. As Pokémon was rather quiet until this point, this response may not garner the material for a plagiarism lawsuit.
