What is Pokemon Unite?

Publish Date: July 21, 2021

“What is Pokemon Unite?”

Many are asking themselves this very question today as the frenzy surrounding the games release has been in full swing. Making it’s debut today on the Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Unite is the Pokemon Company’s newest title, which takes a spin on the classic Multiple Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre. But, of course, it has its own Pokemon flair.

How do I play?

The game is now out and fully available for download on the Nintendo Switch. The game is free to download and is less than 1 BG overall, which makes it extremely accessible to players wanting to hop in on the action.

Don’t have a Switch? Well, you’re in luck! In September of 2021, Pokemon has announced that the game will be available for cross play on mobile devices, which should increase the overall player base for the game by a significant amount.

Gameplay

If you have never heard of the acronym MOBA before, you may be confused about what exactly Pokemon Unite is. The most popular MOBA games are League of Legends and Dota 2, with Heroes of the Storm being Blizzard’s take on the genre.

Essentially, these games are played with an overhead view of a character, in this case a Pokémon of your choosing, in which the characters fight over a map containing different lanes. The end goal is to fight the other team (each game is 5v5), take pivotal points in the map, and complete other challenges that arise along the way.

Below is a visual of the map to aid in understanding better what the game may feel like, but readers should also look to Twitch and other streaming services today to watch gameplay live.

After this, hopefully readers are no longer asking themselves, “What is Pokemon Unite?” and are now instead asking themselves how quickly they can get to play it. To that end, best of luck and make sure to stay up-to-date with everything Pokemon Unite related here at The Game Haus.
