Players, it’s no secret that different countries have different laws regarding certain game industry practices. This is especially prevalent in the case of loot boxes and other mechanics that fall in the gacha genre. These mechanics are used in other games in other countries. European markets are giving Pokémon Unite heat for it.
Support for Pokémon UNITE to be Discontinued in Belgium, Amongst Other Countries
As early as September 27, the Pokémon Company announced their intent to pull UNITE from certain European markets. The most prevalent of these countries are Belgium and the Netherlands. This should officially be done by November 30, 2025. In-game items will be unavailable by October 31 this year.
Remember, this is for European markets and not at all applicable to American markets. This is the full statement released by the PCI:
“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to end service for Pokémon UNITE in Belgium and the Netherlands from November 30, 2025.
As of November 30, 2025, service for Pokémon UNITE will end in Belgium and the Netherlands. The app will no longer be available to download on mobile devices or Nintendo Switch beyond that date. In-game items, including Aeos Gems and Subscriptions, will no longer be available for purchase from October 31, 2024. Please ensure to use all in-game items before November 30, 2025.
Players may reach out to Support for any issues before November 30, 2025.
We’d like to thank our players in Belgium and Netherlands for their support, and we apologise for any inconvenience.” Straight from the PCI
This is Most Likely Due to Microtransactions
It is important to preface before continuing that this is speculative. Many believe that the reason for this decision is Belgium and Netherlands’ harsh restrictions on gacha mechanics. Many are aware of and concerned by the similarities between gacha mechanics and gambling.
Luckily, the core gameplay of Pokémon UNITE is not pay to win and it is still easy to progress without spending real money. However, with battle passes and the temptation to do things in an easier way, it is not a surprise certain markets would want to wash their hands with this Pokémon title.
Conclusion
This is the end for Pokémon UNITE in select European markets. As the industry continues to develop, even Pokémon has to be cautious of the steps they take in making their future games. It’s no secret that Pokémon values its wealth status. To make a game to keep profits maximized, they need to stay in all markets.
