Mega Evolutions are coming back in Pokemon Legends Z-A, and that means Mega Stones will be making a return as well. With leaks suggesting there will be over 26 new Mega Evolutions, the big question becomes: how will we acquire Mega Stones in Pokemon Legends Z-A?
Before diving into the theories, it’s worth looking back at how Mega Stones worked in the past—and where they originally came from—since that could play directly into how they’ll work in Z-A.
Mega Stones were first introduced in Pokemon X and Y as the main gimmick of those games. They represented one of the first major gameplay mechanics added to the Pokemon franchise and became a central part of both X and Y and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (ORAS).
In those games, there were 45 different Mega Pokemon available. ORAS expanded on the concept with an additional 20+ Mega Evolutions.
The lore surrounding Mega Stones ties into the story as well. Professor Sycamore explained that Mega Stones originated from traditional Evolution Stones—like the ones used to evolve Pokemon such as Eevee—but were transformed by the energy of Xerneas or Yveltal when AZ activated the ultimate weapon.
AZ’s connection to Mega Evolution isn’t just lore—it’s foundational. He played a key role in its very creation, and now he’s returning in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
With Mega Evolutions returning and leaks pointing to 20+ new ones being added, the total number of Mega Pokemon climbs to 71, with 73 unique Mega Stones (due to multiple forms for Charizard and Mewtwo). Given how many have already been teased or revealed, it’s expected that players will be able to collect all of them.
But how?
In X/Y and ORAS, Mega Stones were acquired in a variety of ways—some were found in the overworld, others were purchased, and some were rewards for completing side quests or in-game milestones.
Expect that variety to return, but likely with a new twist. Here are three possible theories:
AZ played a major role in the origins of Mega Evolution, and now he seems to be central to the Z-A storyline once again.
The current belief is that players will be staying at AZ’s hotel in Lumiose City, and that he’ll be the one guiding them on quests. These quests could involve helping Pokemon and people throughout the city and the surrounding region. In return, players would receive Mega Stones as rewards.
It’s even possible that AZ has access to all the stones himself, handing them out as trust and progress build through the storyline. Given his involvement in the creation of Mega Evolution and the confirmed return of his character, this feels like more than just speculation.
The second possibility is that Mega Stones are obtained just like they were in X/Y and ORAS—scattered across the world, found during exploration, purchased in shops, or given as rewards for side quests.
Some could be tied to DLC or postgame content. This method would appeal to long-time fans who remember scouring Kalos or Hoenn for that one last missing Mega Stone.
This one’s a bit more speculative, but here’s where it gets interesting: There are 26 letters in the alphabet and, supposedly, 26 new Mega Evolutions coming.
Coincidence? Maybe not.
There’s a belief that these new Mega Stones could be tied into the rumored Z-A Royale—perhaps a battle system, event format, or some new gameplay loop. It could be that players need to conquer specific challenges associated with each “letter” to unlock each Mega Evolution.
As for the returning Mega Pokémon, they may be acquired more easily. Some could be given automatically once the relevant Pokémon is caught, or could be tied into AZ’s storyline quests.
With the return of Mega Evolutions and the expanded number of Pokémon receiving them, Pokémon Legends Z-A will need to provide a solid, rewarding system for acquiring all 73 Mega Stones.
Whether it’s through AZ’s personal questlines, classic item-hunting mechanics, or a mysterious new Z-A Royale system, fans should expect a mix of nostalgia and innovation. One thing’s for sure—the Mega Evolution system is back in a big way.
