The excitement around Pokémon Legends Z-A continues to build, especially with all the information revealed in recent trailers. There’s much to consider when it comes to the number of Pokémon that will be featured in the game, not just from the most recent footage but also from past entries like Pokémon X and Y and Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire. Let’s take a look at what has been learned so far.
The original trailer showed off a pretty good amount of Pokémon, including some newer Pokémon that were not in X and Y. This was a big deal, as a lot of people were trying to look at the trailer as a way to find out if there were any potential leaks for new Megas, evolutions, and so on. After going through the trailer, not much was found, but then two more trailers were released on Pokémon Day 2025. These trailers not only gave the starters but also provided the 2025 release date, which left many still disappointed. Along with this, many more Pokémon were revealed, but most were Mega Evolutions or Pokémon that had already been anticipated for the game.

A list was put together by taking all the Pokémon that appeared in the first trailer, then adding those from the second and third trailers. On top of that, all the Mega Evolutions, even those not shown in the trailers, were added to make a list of exactly 190 Pokémon confirmed for Pokémon Legends Za.
This means at least 190 Pokémon are expected, including all the Megas, which may be added in later DLC. This could be similar to Pokémon Legends Arceus, where the full Pokédex was not available initially. A quick look at Pokémon Legends Arceus shows that it had about 242 Pokémon in its Pokédex, including new ones like Enamorus, Hisuian Braviary, and Hisuian Zoroark. If the same approach is taken, there would only be 50 spots left open in the Pokédex.
To dig even deeper, a cross-reference was done with the Pokémon from the Kalos region, focusing on those that had not been shown in the trailers. Kalos has 454 Pokémon across three different Pokédexes: Central, Coastal, and Mountain. However, Pokémon Legends Za will only take place in the Central Kalos region, specifically Lumiose City, which means not all 454 will make it into the game.
There are still 33 Kalos Pokémon that haven’t been shown in the trailers, including Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, along with their entire evolutionary lines. These can almost be guaranteed to be in the game, though it’s unknown where they will appear. Will they be secondary starters, like with the original three starters? It’s unclear, but at the very least, these nine Pokémon could add 199 Pokémon to the roster.
Other Pokémon not shown so far include Esper and Meowstic, as well as Benle and Barbaracle. Though they weren’t shown, it’s expected they will make an appearance. The Pokémon Tyrant and Tyrantrum, as well as Helioptile and Heliolisk, are also missing, which is interesting. There’s also the possibility that some of these Pokémon were left out intentionally because they might have Mega Evolutions in store.
With the additions of the missing Kalos Pokémon, the total number rises to 223. This leaves 19 spots open if the game follows the same structure as Pokémon Legends Arceus. Considering that Kalos has 454 Pokémon across all its regions, it’s unlikely that the game will feature every single one, especially since the focus is on Lumiose City.
With new Pokémon being added to the Kalos Pokédex and the possibility of more evolutions and surprises, it’s starting to seem less likely that Generation 7, 8, or 9 Pokémon will make their way into the game. It’s a bit of a bummer since it’s been such a long time since Generation 9 was released, but it seems that the focus will remain mostly on Kalos Pokémon.
As for the total number of Pokémon in the game, it’s expected that the final count will fall somewhere between 250 and 275. The 190 Pokémon that have already been shown will likely be rounded off by the 33 Kalos Pokémon still missing. And considering Pokémon’s tendency to prefer round numbers (minus legendary Pokémon), it’s looking like around 250 to 275 is a solid estimate.
One thing that hasn’t been revealed yet are new Mega Evolutions, but it’s almost a given that they will make an appearance. It’s possible that some of the Pokémon that haven’t been shown yet could be those with Mega Evolutions. The intention behind which Pokémon have been shown so far seems to be very specific, with certain Pokémon being held back for this purpose.
At this point, it seems that Pokémon Legends Za will feature somewhere between 250 and 275 Pokémon. This includes the 190 that have already been shown, the 33 Kalos Pokémon that are expected to appear, and possibly some surprises down the line. The chances of Pokémon from later generations making their way into the game appear slim, but there’s still hope for a few extra additions. Time will tell how many surprises remain as the game’s release approaches.
