One of the biggest questions leading up to the release of Pokémon Legends ZA has been: who are the starters going to be? Ever since the game’s announcement, fans have speculated, theorized, and debated which Pokémon might take up those coveted starter spots. Many tier lists have surfaced, including ones put together here at The Game Haus, as people try to predict the three Pokémon that could be the starters.
But what if, instead of choosing from three traditional starters, there was only one—and that Pokémon was Eevee?
So let’s break it down. The game takes place in Kalos, and many believe that Pokémon Legends ZA will be set in the present or even slightly in the future. There are some key reasons behind this, which have been discussed in previous analyses. And with Pokémon Day approaching, more definitive answers will soon emerge. Now, this theory is a long shot—there’s a strong chance three traditional starters will still be included. But the idea is that when entering Kalos, the player starts with only one Pokémon: Eevee. Instead of the usual professor handing out a starter, the protagonist might be placed in a different role—perhaps already involved in something before officially beginning their journey. Maybe a starter is still given later on, but Eevee serves as the first Pokémon. This could be similar to Pokémon X and Y, where players received both a Kalos starter (Fennekin, Chespin, or Froakie) and a Kanto starter (Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Charmander) due to Mega Evolution. The biggest argument against Eevee as a starter is that it likely wouldn’t receive a Mega Evolution like the Kanto starters did. But hear this out…
This theory combines multiple ideas that have been circulating. Many believe Pokémon Legends ZA will introduce a new Eeveelution. The last time a new one was introduced was Sylveon—coincidentally, in Kalos—when the Fairy type was added. There were rumors that Pokémon Sun and Moon was supposed to introduce a Flying-type Eeveelution, but it was scrapped due to a fan-made design looking too similar. Now, recent promotional art shows Eeveelutions in hot air balloons, and many think the white stripe on them hints at a Flying-type evolution. Could this be reading too much into things? Maybe. But here’s where it gets interesting.
Why has 2025 been declared the Year of Eevee and Eeveelutions? Why not last year, when there wasn’t much new Pokémon content aside from the Pokémon TCG Pocket Game? It likely comes down to two things:
Eevee has been pushed harder in the last decade than ever before. It’s arguably the second most popular and recognizable Pokémon after Pikachu. Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee even cemented Eevee as a mascot. If a new Eeveelution is introduced, why not give players Eevee as their starter? Imagine a system where at level 20, Eevee evolves based on the player’s choice, integrating its evolution into the story. A professor (maybe Sycamore if it’s set in the present) or another Pokémon X and Y character could guide players through the evolution process. An in-game event could help determine the evolution, allowing for stone evolutions (Fire, Water, Electric, Leaf, Ice), friendship-based evolutions (Espeon, Umbreon, Sylveon), or even the brand-new Flying-type Eeveelution.
This is a wild theory, and the odds are slim. But Pokémon Legends ZA is set in Kalos, it’s the Year of Eevee, and Eevee is getting more attention than ever. This could be a way to make Eevee the centerpiece of the game. Even if Eevee isn’t the official starter, it will likely be given to players early on. Either way, something big is happening with Eevee in Pokémon Legends ZA.
