Meta has thrown its hat in the virtual reality ring for a while now seeing two headset iterations. The company comes back hitting the competition hard with the announcement of the Meta Quest 3. There are a lot of promises being made this time around, especially since the company claims the Quest 3 to be superior to the superior version of the Quest 2. During the Connect keynote event, the Meta Quest 3 was revealed and showcased to the public. Here’s everything you need to know about the Meta Quest 3 from the release date, price, specs, and more.
The next iteration of the Quest’s virtual reality headset is set to release on October 10, 2023. Those interested won’t have to wait too long for it as it’s just around the corner. With the headset coming soon, Meta hasn’t made any plans to discontinue the Quest 2 just yet. For now, users can still enjoy the headset to the fullest. The key word in that sentence being “for now.”
Compared to the Quest 2, the Quest 3 improves on all fronts. The new headset has an upgrade to its graphical fidelity by using LCDs with a resolution of 2064×2209 per eye lens, and 8GB of RAM. The Quest 3 weighs 515 grams and has six different advanced camera sensors on the device. In terms of what’s going on inside the headset, the Quest 3 uses a second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset, providing a smoother and more advanced experience when in use. In addition to this, the Quest 3 supports Wi-Fi 6E, supports 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates, and can play PC VR games.
The controllers themselves have been rehauled going through a design change. This is to provide a more comfortable experience when using the headset and to make it easier when playing certain games. Sadly, the controllers themselves aren’t rechargeable and still take AA batteries to use. One of the issues that was present with the Quest 2 was the amount of battery life the headset sustained. Unfortunately, the Quest 3’s battery life has remained the same with only 2.4 hours of life when the headset is fully charged.
The Meta Quest 3 currently is priced at $499.99 for the 128GB model. For those willing to go all the way, the headset is $649.99 for the 512GB model.
