Madden 22: Most Underrated New York Giants

The Madden 22 ratings have finally been unveiled. As always, there are some questionable ratings for players on every single team. In this series, TGH writers will give their opinions on the most overrated and underrated players on each roster.

Here are the players on the Giants that have been the most underrated by Madden 22.

Saquon Barkley

There is simply no way that Barkley is the league’s seventh-best running back.

Madden, like many other rankings, tends to place too much emphasis on injuries. Barkley missed most of last season with an ACL tear but is unarguably one of the league’s most talented skill position players when healthy. In 2018, his only full season, Barkley averaged five yards per carry and led the league with 2,028 yards from scrimmage. His 91 receptions were the most ever by a rookie running back. Barkley missed three games the following year but was on pace to once again place in the top three in yards from scrimmage.

Barkley returned to practice this Monday. Though he has yet to confirm his Week 1 status, it appears that he will be fully healthy for the start of the season. If we see the Barkley we saw in 2018 — a player with generational agility and field vision — he will once again enter the conversation for the NFL’s best running back.

Madden 22 rating: 90

Adjusted rating: 95 (+5)

Daniel Jones

By all measures, Daniel Jones has been at least a slight disappointment so far. He has fumbled 29 times in 25 career games and threw only 11 touchdown passes last year.

However, a rating of 72 — 32nd among quarterbacks — seems a bit unfair. Four rookie quarterbacks are ranked ahead of Jones. While it might be fair to say that those rookies have more potential than Jones, there is no way that Zach Wilson or Trey Lance are currently better players than Jones, a two-year veteran.

Jones’ overall is brought down by a 78 in the “throw under pressure” category. Forty other quarterbacks earned a higher rating. That includes Jake Fromm, the Bills’ third-string quarterback who has never thrown a pass in the NFL.

But as a rookie, Jones completed 53.1 percent of his passes and earned a 73.3 passer rating while under pressure. That performance was enough for NFL.com to rank him as the tenth-best quarterback under pressure.

Madden 22 rating: 72

Adjusted rating: 76 (+4)

Evan Engram

Engram’s rating is very disconnected from the league’s opinion of him. Engram was a 2020 Pro-Bowler but is ranked behind three tight ends who have never made it to the Pro Bowl. He is the rated as the 13th-best tight end but placed eighth in a recent ESPN poll of league executives.

Engram has had an up-and-down career so far. Even though he never quite lived up to his first-round draft status, he has still averaged a respectable 48.4 yards per game despite often playing through injury. He has topped 650 yards in a season twice; Dallas Goedert and Mike Gesicki, both ranked above Engram, have done that once between them.

Inexplicably, Engram’s rating is brought down by low route-running scores instead of his “catching” rating. Engram led all tight ends with eight drops last year but is known for having the route-running ability of a wideout.
