While the massive growth of AI is causing ripples in various industries in the world, and upending multiple jobs and starting to force many people to consider the work that they do, it is also easing the workload of plenty of people who are making art.
And it isn’t all about replacement of artists and writers and others with AI, but many creatives are starting to work with AI. They are using it to augment the process, reduce tedium, and with AI handling the light stuff, they can focus all their time and energy on the harder projects.
In game design (an area filled to the brim with countless concept art phases, deadlines, and management breathing down everyone’s necks to get the game out on time), AI art is actually turning into a benefit… provided it is used correctly.
The world of creating art for a video game is actually very interesting. Depending on the type of game, the genre of the game, and various other factors, artists will brainstorm, look at similar games, do research, and pull from various pieces of media to eventually come up with a few images or concepts. These will then be narrowed down, refined, and changed until the final product is agreed upon.
This process is good, and it works, but it often takes time. Multiple hours of research, searching, gathering information, and brainstorming sessions are going to be used to get to the end result.
AI artistry on the other hand, can simply take a handful of images and create as many variations or images inspired by what it has been fed as needed. This saves a lot of time and allows for artists to see a lot of inspirational images very very quickly.
The text in a game is important. Descriptions for weapons, armor, locations, tutorials, party dialogues, and more are all in every single game. But the sad part is, many players will never see them, or at least not all of them.
Rather than having to write all of the flavor text that not a lot of players are going to read or experience, it is easier to have AI handle the generation and then for a writer or artist to go over it.
Additionally, in many games, there are NPCs that don’t do much. Either they are background NPCs with only a few pre-recorded lines, or NPCs that run out of stuff to say once their role in the quest/story is done.
However, with AI services, many more lines of dialogue can be created without the game developer putting extra time into writing those lines and considering every possible voice line for every NPC. Instead, they can just feed the AI details, and allow dialogue remarks to be created.
As a game developer, the tools to make a game can’t be easier to use, and many people are making their own games simply by using AI tools and the existing game making tools that are out there in the world. However, AI is still in its infancy and limited in what can be done, and if you try to make a game using AI only… it is going to be a jumbled mess of ideas with no clear story.
So while AI is making game development easier, you still need to have a team of people who are passionate about your game and a solid story to fall back on. Then you’ve got a game people want to play!
