Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was released on October 5 and quickly caught the attention of fighting game players. Sharing gameplay similarities with Smash Bros, NASB expands on the platform fighters sub-genre. Through just week one, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl tournaments already show promise for the game’s competitive future.

While players learn the new game’s mechanics, Panda Global hosted an open bracket tournament online this weekend. The Toon Showdown Open had 463 total entrants battling in Nickelodeon’s new fighting game on October 10.
Featuring a $500 prize pool, Panda Global’s first open bracket NASB tournament rewarded competitors on the grind early. Top 8 featured a variety of Nickelodeon fan-favorite characters like Spongebob and Ren & Stimpy. Meanwhile TMNT characters like Michelangelo, Leonardo and April O’Neil proved successful for half of the top 8 placements. Weger took first place using Michelangelo, defeating KirbyKid in the grand finals.
Kusi placed third behind KirbyKid as the sole Spongebob player in top 8.
HeartswapTV hosted a 24-player invitational tournament on Friday, October 8. Though the Waveslime Invitational only featured a handful of players, big names like Hungrybox and iBDW gave spectators plenty of reason to tune in.

While invited competitors came from a variety of backgrounds, veteran Rivals of Aether player Fullstream took first place over many strong Smash competitors.
Nickelodeon hosted an invitational event of their own named the Nicktoon Throwdown Invitational. During the game’s release celebration, invited players received early copies of the game to begin learning system mechanics and characters.
Though Spongebob and TMNT characters had success in other early events, Void took first place in the invitational using Aang. Void earned a $5000 prize for his victory, while second-place finisher FumbLynn claimed $1000 using Lucy Loud. FumbLynn later went on to win Slime City, defeating Pug’s Sandy.
Though Nickelodeon’s fighting game is only a week old, developer Ludosity already confirmed balance patches and DLC in the future. Platform fighting games outside of the Smash Bros franchise have seen moderate success at fighting game events in the past, but only time will tell if NASB earns a spot in tournament lineups alongside Nintendo’s titan franchise.
