HORI Newest Controller For PS5; The Fighting Commander OCTA

Publish Date: July 15, 2022

HORI, the famous third-party manufacturer releases their new licensed controller in the Fighting Commander line, the Fighting Commander OCTA.

The Fighting Commanders’ History

The Fighting Commander line of controllers is an alternative choice for people who wish to have a controller dedicated to fighting games, platformers, or arcade titles.

HORI has released past renditions of the Fighting Commander in the past. The line of controllers even goes back to consoles such as the PC Engine, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis.

However, the newest model, the OCTA, is currently for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The controller is still compatible with the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. New additions and design changes make the OCTA an upgrade over the previous model.

The OCTA like past renditions main feature is the layout of the controller. Six face buttons that mimic the style of arcade buttons. Alongside the main face buttons found on the controller is the R1/RB and R2/RT button, usually used for heavy attacks in fighting games.

The Controllers Features

Where the R1/RB and R2/RT buttons normally are, they’re now the L1/LB and L2/LT buttons. The buttons use micro switches. Micro switches give the buttons more of a tactile feel to them and are a lot clicker.

The controller also features a different D-pad and only a single analog stick. Users can fix the D-Pad sensitivity for their preference. As the controller is for fighting games or other various arcade and 2D games, it’s missing a right analog stick. In exchange for the missing right analog stick, the L3 and R3 buttons occupy the left side of the controller.

The other major change to the OCTA is the analog stick featuring 8 gates. The gates on the analog stick are similar to how a GameCube analog controller feels with 8 angles that allow the user to be more precise. This also more closely mimics an octagonal gate that could be located be in an arcade stick. While most manufacturers use square gates, some people replace them with octagonal gates.

This doesn’t make it better or worse, as it depends on the user’s preference. However many might find it to be more accurate than how most controllers use it.

A mute button and headsets are useable on the controller, similar to the Duealsense. with the featured headset jack.

Configurations can be made with HORI’s companion app. The app can be accessed through a computer and adjustments can be made. Changes from button inputs, D-Pad sensitivity, and profile settings. Four profiles are adjustable for the use between different games or genres.

The Release

The HORI Fighting Commander is an alternative option for those who believe it’d give them a better experience with fighting games. The controller costs $59.99 on Amazon or other marketplaces that focus on fighting game equipment. More information can be found on the official HORI website.

Via Twitter, HORI has also made an official announcement for their newest fighting stick, the Fighting Stick α. The stick will release sometime in Aug. for the PS5 and PS4. The Xbox Series X/S version is already available for purchase.
