Capcom Fighters Collection Classic: A Reintroduction to the 90s

Publish Date: June 28, 2022

Capcom released their newest collection of classic capcom fighters for the 35th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise, titled Capcom Fighters Collection.

What’s Included In The Collection

The collection features the original arcade versions of 10 classic fighting games, from 1994 to 2003. Most notable releases include all arcade versions of the Darkstalkers series, known as Vampire in Japan. Prominently Vampire Savior: World of Darkness, also known as Darkstalkers 3 in the west.

The collection also contains the two games from the Pocket Fighter Series. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, is a puzzle game featuring characters from Capcom fighters, such as Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. Also features Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, a fighting game in the same chibi style as Super Puzzle Fighter.

Other games included are Cyberbots, Red Earth, and Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition.

The first time Cyberbots was released in the west was in 1995. Previous console ports for the Sega Saturn and Playstation were Japanese exclusive. Red Earth has never been released outside of arcades in Japan.

The collection also features Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition, a modified version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. A version that allows players to control all the different variations of characters.

Every game and their respective versions are playable online and feature rollback netcode.

What’s Missing From the Collection

As a collection of fighting games, this is missing some other popular fighting games, notably from the Street Fighter series. This is due to the release of the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.

That collection featured the original Street Fighter, and all the versions of Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, and Street Fighter III.

The significant difference being only Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike was playable online. These versions were chosen because they are the most popular versions used for tournament play.

Some features from the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection are present in the Capcom Fighting Collection. Features include the gallery of artwork, concept art, etc. As well as the ability to hop between the different games in between matches. For example, after a match of Vampire Savior, you’ll be challenged to play Red Earth.

The starting price of the collection is $40, this may be steep for players who feel it’s missing games such as Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Many people purchased the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection just to play Third Strike.

A physical bundle exists, coming with both the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and Capcom Fighting Collection. However, it’s exclusive in Japan.

Is It Worth Purchasing?

The initial response from players is the collection is a good deal with the games in the bundle. Also praising the solid netcode.

The collection is released on all modern platforms, with no crossplay available. Meaning the platform you choose might be more important than it seems.

While there is no official player count, steam charts seem to hint at the lack of concurrent players. Possibly due to many PC players choosing to play these games on Fightcade. An emulator that allows players to play against others with better netcode.

While those who exclusively play on consoles, may not even know of Fightcade. Others just wish to support a re-release, letting Capcom know that they would like to see more in the future.
