If you are bored of gaming, want something new and entertaining, or just want to pass the time, I have found the game for everyone.
If you haven’t played Baldur’s Gate 3 already or are playing almost a year after its release, like myself, well I am here to tell you that you may be missing out on a gaming staple in the making.
As someone unfamiliar with the Dungeons and Dragons rules and playstyle, and only familiar by name. I was intrigued yet hesitant to dive into a game that follows Dungeons and Dragons rules closely.
However, after playing Baldur’s Gate 3, it is incredibly addictive, complex, and, entertaining.
I’m serious. I have put days into the game. From playing by myself and the playable characters to creating a brand-new world with friends. I’m here to share my experience with Baldur’s Gate 3.
Firstly, the story of the game is an interesting one. Because the game is a choice-driven narrative, players can choose whatever route they see fit.
Want to follow an evil and death-littered path? Try the Dark Urge origin character. Want to be a hero and save the day? Create your own TAV and recruit allies and companions to follow and help you along the journey. Want to control the world? Try controlling the entity that enemies and allies alike are infected with.
There are hundreds of outcomes that Larian Studio put into this game that it will require days of effort to see all possible outcomes, and even then the player will miss something.
Personally, the combat is what makes the game addictive. When the player makes their character, the player can choose what class to make their avatar. There are 12 of them, along with different races, subclasses, forms, Gods to follow, and so on.
Ranging from melee fighters such as barbarians and assassins to oath-bound Paladins, shape-shifting druids, and spell-casting wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks. There is something for everyone.
It is exciting to bring your character and build them however you wish. Personally, Paladins are entertaining because the mix of infusing divine, fiery, or fearful magic into your weapon to smite down your enemies is the perfect mix for those who want to be up close but cast some magic.
However, if you really can’t decide between classes, players can also multi-class into two or more classes. Gaining benefits from both classes and being versatile, some may work better than others. But each player can decide whatever they want to do.
The combat is turn-based so players have to strategically think about what attack they want to make, whether they should cast a defensive spell, or heal themselves or allies.
There are so many features, techniques, combat situations, and so on to name in Baldur’s Gate 3 that it would take an entire new list to name them all.
Players can also invite up to three other players (four total) to create their world make the choices as a collective group and see how their playthrough differs from solo ones.
As previously mentioned, there are hundreds of dialogue options, and choices can either earn you approval or disapproval depending on your companion and how their personality is. Some dialogue options will land you in combat, some will land you with peaceful NPCs that will not attack you in an area you need to advance in. Some dialogue can change the way the game flows forever.
And it is at the player’s discretion what they want to do. Sometimes I did not like the way someone talked or treated me, so I purposely entered combat. Other times, I did not enter combat for the sake of not wasting resources or wanting to risk my party dying.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is an awe-inspiring game for developers, it truly shows how much effort, technique, and love they put into this game for fans in and out of the Dungeons and Dragons community.
My only issue is that I found the PS5 version to be pretty buggy, especially in multiplayer. Getting stuck in dialogue, having to reload the game, and frames dropping hard when it comes to certain populated areas can take away from the experience a tad. Players can only hope that more patches come soon to fix these issues.
Ultimately, if you cannot find a new and exciting game to play, and you have not played Baldur’s Gate 3, it should instantly move up in your list of games to try. There is a reason why it won Game of the Year 2023, and I see that now.
There is so much experimentation and knowledge that players will easily become addicted to the game if they aren’t already.
