The potential for older Civilization leaders to return in Civ 7 is high, especially with the decoupling of Civs and leaders. This article examines five leaders from past Civ games that should grace our screens once more.
A quick note: Genghis Khan is excluded from this list. Rumors suggest he’s slated for the “Right to Rule” DLC, so he is considered a bonus inclusion.
Alexander the Great, a leader who effectively led multiple civilizations, extended his empire across Eurasia, reaching into India. While an “expansionist” tag might seem obvious, a cultural focus would be equally fitting.
Alexander spread culture as he conquered, and with Civ 7’s mechanics, he could influence city-states and even neighboring nations through cultural dominance. His culture could sway cities to join his empire, offering a unique blend of expansion and influence. He is a Civ veteran, having appeared in every installment, and his absence in Civ 7 would be a glaring omission.
Joan of Arc, a remarkable figure who achieved much in a short time, deserves consideration. While her story is deeply intertwined with religion, a mechanic currently underutilized in Civ 7, she can be reimagined. A diplomatic approach, emphasizing her attempts to prevent conflict, could offer a refreshing playstyle.
Joan of Arc would bring a unique dynamic to the game, contrasting with the likes of Napoleon. Her inclusion would be a welcome nod to a pivotal historical figure.
Saladin, last seen in Civ 5, deserves a return. Another leader who could excel in both diplomacy and culture, though perhaps with a stronger lean towards expansion. His accomplishments during the Crusades and his ability to consolidate power make him a compelling choice.
While religion played a significant role in his life, his diplomatic prowess and cultural influence can be explored. An expansion focusing on religion could even see him and Joan of Arc featured together, offering a fascinating thematic pairing.
Winston Churchill, a prominent figure in Civ 4, makes a strong case for inclusion. His absence in recent titles is a missed opportunity. While he could be seen as militaristic, his focus was on preserving the British Empire.
Diplomacy and expansion would be his strengths, reflecting his efforts to maintain Britain’s global influence. Imagine starting a game with Churchill at the helm, guiding a fledgling civilization into a powerful empire. His historical significance and compelling personality make him a must-have.
Gandhi, a Civ staple and a fan favorite, should return. While his past in-game iterations have been… unpredictable, a more peaceful, culture and influence-focused leader is desired.
Like Alexander, Gandhi has appeared in every Civ game, making his absence unthinkable. He could excel at cultural victories or influence-based gameplay, perhaps similar to Harriet Tubman but with a cultural twist. Gandhi’s inclusion within the “Right to Rule” DLC would be a welcome surprise.
These are five leaders from Civ’s past that deserve a spot in Civ 7.
