De Sousa sat out last season due to the FBI investigation into college basketball. Adidas rep T.J. Gassnola incriminated De Sousa’s guardian during testimony, which is why he was held out of competition for the 2018-2019 season.
While he awaited a decision from the NCAA on his appeal to be eligible, De Sousa entered the 2019 NBA Draft. He said that he would return to school if he was eligible for the season.
As a freshman in 2017-2018, De Sousa played a key role of the bench for the Jayhawks, averaging 4.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
