The Rockets have since released a statement.
“After much internal discussion, the Rockets will be parting ways with Carmelo Anthony and we are working toward a resolution,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said in a statement. “Carmelo had a tremendous approach during his time with the Rockets and accepted every role head coach Mike D’Antoni gave him. The fit we envisioned when Carmelo chose to sign with the Rockets has not materialized, therefore we thought it was best to move on as any other outcome would have been unfair to him.”
Houston will keep Anthony on the roster before deciding whether to trade him or waive him. Any trade would have to wait until December 15, per NBA rules, because Anthony was signed as a free agent this offseason.
Anthony played in 10 of the team’s 13 games this season and averaged 13.4 points per game. He has only started two of the games he has played in, which reportedly created problems over the role Anthony had on the team.
The Rockets are 6-7 on the season as they try to make it back to the Western Conference Finals for the second straight year.
Anthony is a 10-time All-Star, who will likely be looking for a larger role on his next team.
