Schiano was formerly in the NFL as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012 to 2013. He posted an 11-21 record in Tampa Bay.
He also has plenty of experience at the college level. Schiano was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes in 1999 and 2000. He helped the Hurricanes be one of the most feared teams in college football and also coached several future pros at the school.
After his stint at Coral Gables, Schiano got the head coaching position at Rutgers. He was the coach from 2001 through 2011 and helped turn Rutgers into a solid program. Schiano notched two wins in his first season, but peaked in 2006 when he led the Scarlet Knights to an 11-2 record and a victory in the Texas Bowl over Kansas State, which was the first bowl game win in program history.
He left Rutgers after the 2011 season to become coach of the Buccaneers. Following his stint in Tampa he coached high school football until he joined the staff of Urban Meyer at Ohio State, with the position of associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator for three seasons. With the Buckeyes he coached a lot of NFL talent.
Now, Schiano will become the third defensive coordinator in New England in three years. Matt Patricia left to take the Detroit head coaching job after the 2017 season, while Brian Flores left following Super Bowl LIII to fill the head coaching vacancy in Miami.
