Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts has been named the American League MVP as announced on Thursday Night. Betts beat out Mike Trout and Jose Ramirez to win the award.
Not only did he win the MVP this season, but he also won a batting title and led the Red Sox to a World Series victory. On the season, Betts hit .346 with 32 home runs and 80 RBIs. He also was able to steal 30 bases, making it a 30/30 year.
Betts was clearly the best player on the best team this season, which makes him qualified to win the award. He helped the Red Sox win 108 games in the regular season, then helped them through the playoffs to beat the Dodgers in the World Series.
This is Betts’ first career MVP award. Boston has had 10 different MVP winners before Betts including Dustin Pedroia, Mo Vaughn, Roger Clemens, Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, Jackie Jensen, Ted Williams (2x), Jimmie Foxx and Tris Speaker.
