The University of Louisville has fired head football coach Bobby Petrino after starting the season 2-8 according to Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde.
Petrino has spent nine seasons at Louisville in two different stints. His first stint ended after the 2006 season, when he left to coach the Atlanta Falcons. He went back to Louisville after a stint with Arkansas and Western Kentucky.
He has a 77-35 career record at Louisville, but they have not won a game in the ACC this season. Over his time at Louisville, Petrino has produced a 12-1 Orange Bowl-winning season and a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback in Lamar Jackson.
Petrino has a large buyout that Forde estimated was around $14 million.
Louisville was criticized for bringing Petrino back to coach, after he left for the Falcons and got fired from Arkansas for reckless behavior.
Lorenzo Ward, the former associate head coach and secondary coach, will take over for the rest of the season.
