Julius Thomas to retire from football, pursue PhD

Publish Date: August 24, 2018

Julius Thomas penned a letter in the Player’s Tribune that announced his retirement from the NFL. The unrestricted free agent will now pursue a Ph.D. in Psychology to further study Brain trauma.

From his letter:

And that’s a big part of why I’ve decided to go back to school.

  • While making the decision to no longer play the game is difficult, I’m also incredibly excited about what’s next:  Studying therapy and becoming well trained in it so that I can help people heal from their emotional and mental pain.
  • Investigating the effects of contact sports on brain trauma and neurobehavioral performance.
  • Participating in research looking at biomarkers that may identify early warning signs of brain disease.

These are the things I’ll be learning and working on over the next year as I begin to pursue a doctorate in psychology.

Thomas played seven NFL seasons for three NFL teams. He started his career in Denver and played for four seasons. He was part of the Bronco’s Super Bowl 50 team that featured Peyton Manning.

After Denver, Thomas spent two seasons in Jacksonville and one in Miami. He was cut by the Dolphins in March of this year and was not signed by any other team.

He finishes his career with 226 receptions, 2,2406 yards and 36 touchdowns. Thomas made the Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014.
