The 2019 NFL Draft is over and teams are getting comfortable with their new draft picks. The next class of players is getting prepared now for another year of college football. Each position will be analyzed in the coming days. Here are the best 2020 NFL Draft prospects: Safeties.
Note: Players will not be ranked in the article.
Grant Delpit, LSU
Delpit follows the long line of NFL-caliber talent that heads down to Baton Rouge and then goes on to the next level and become stars. The highly-recruited player out of Houston is 6-foot-3 and 203 pounds and has a chance to be the highest drafted safety since Jamal Adams.
He was able to break the starting lineup on a very talented LSU team as a freshman. Delpit made an impact with 60 tackles and eight passes defended. As a sophomore in 2018, Delpit was named a unanimous All-American and finished the season with 74 tackles and five interceptions. The expectations are high for Delpit, but he has all the skills necessary to be a top 10 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Jordan Fuller, Ohio State
A four-star prospect out of New Jersey, Fuller decided to go to Ohio State and has seen success over his three seasons at the school. He has a good build at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, which is a solid starting point for his future NFL career.
Fuller played in all 13 games as a true freshman, but then started as a sophomore. He responded with 62 tackles and two interceptions. As a leader in his junior season, Fuller stepped up his game even more with 81 total tackles and four passes defended. He has progressed well through his college career and continuing to do so will help him get selected earlier in the draft.
Alohi Gilman, Notre Dame
One of the most unique stories in all of college football is Gilman, who transferred from Navy to Notre Dame and has made a big impact on their defense. He is just 5-foot-11, but has decent strength at 202 pounds, which makes him versatile.
Gilman was a star for Navy with 76 tackles and five passes defended as a true freshman. To help him reach his dream of playing in the NFL, Gilman transferred to Notre Dame after his stellar freshman season. He sat out one season then was one of the best players for the Fighting Irish in 2018. Gilman racked up 94 tackles and two interceptions in his first season with the Irish. His production should help him reach his dream of playing in the NFL soon enough.
Richard LeCounte, Georgia
LeCounte was an All-American in high school and joined a bunch of great recruits in the 2017 recruitment class in going to Georgia. He is great in coverage, which is a good thing given that he is only 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds.
He played sparingly in his freshman season and even started the game against Notre Dame in South Bend. As a sophomore, he stepped into the starting lineup and totaled 74 tackles and one interception for the Bulldogs. LeCounte has already proven himself as one of the best safeties in college football and should be selected relatively early in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Xavier McKinney, Alabama
Alabama has been producing great safeties for the last couple of seasons and McKinney stepped in when they lost yet another group to the NFL. He should feel at home in the NFL with his fellow Alabama players, as he is 6-foot-1 and 198 pounds.
He didn’t get much playing time as a freshman, but did play in mop-up duty and on special teams. His play as a starter in his second season as a member of the Crimson Tide helped lead them to the College Football Playoff. McKinney finished the season with 74 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defended. Getting one more year of experience will go a long way to help his draft stock.
