Fortnite: What We Can Take Into 2019

2018 is about over, and Fortnite has had one crazy ride. The competitive scene has seen many shifts in regards to what the meta is. Most noticeable shifts of 2018 were shotgun changes, the rise of building and editing, and the biggest cause of contention: mobility items/vehicles. So with an ever-changing meta, how can you keep a leg up on the competition in 2019? Simple: by staying up to date with building strategies, sticking to your style and joining a community.

Much More Than 90’s Now

Building is still the biggest component when playing competitively; you can have the best aim in the lobby, but as soon as you get cone’d all that aim practice has gone to waste. The majority of competitive Fortnite players at the very least can both do 90’s and close quarter combat edit with some success. Going into 2019, players need to start practicing other techniques. Reddit u/ImSpeedyGonzalez showcases a very useful technique that is helpful for moving zones, shown here. Another form of that technique that is material-heavy is Ghost Bizzle’s way of snaking within late game storm, shown here. Stay up to date with building strategies! Practicing your building technique should not hinder your play style, nor should it influence you to play a certain way that you aren’t comfortable with.

All Styles Welcomed

No play style is dumb. In 2018, we have seen mostly NA style of playing, and that’s defensive. During the Fall Skirmish and Winter Royale, we have seen different styles that have caught us NA players off guard, as shown here. 2018 should be a wake up call that no one style is the correct way to play. We have seen players with insane aim be OK builders and vice-versa. The play style isn’t what gives pros their credibility; it’s the clarity, confidence and tactfulness. TSM Daequan, FAZE Tfue and Ghost Bizzle are known to have high kill games, whereas Team Liquid are known to be more Strategic. Different play styles, all pros within Fortnite. A good way to get better is to practice against a friend or someone on Discord who plays differently than you. You can learn something new about your style or theirs.

Competitiveness Needs a Community

Even a solo player needs a community. Fortnite Pro League is a great example of how solo players can find a place to practice. Even before pop-up cups, the FNPL has been there giving amateurs and pros alike a place to practice, be it solo or squads. If you are looking for a different way to practice, there are editing speed run courses and death match discords are a great option. No matter what your style, you can find the right fit for you. Thanks to the ambitious community and creative mode, you can practice virtually any aspect of your play style. Going into 2019, you need to find a community to practice in if you want to get a leg up on the competition. Just remember that not every death match you manage to get into will be at the same skill level as you.
