Fortnite: The Change That Needs to Happen

Publish Date: February 12, 2019

Fortnite in its current state is very stale. Changes need to happen very quickly so that Fortnite does not lose its competitive aspect to Apex Legends. With the new battle royale lighting a fire underneath Epic to make quality updates, players are hoping Epic listens. Once top streamers leave to go and play a different game, it is the beginning of the end. If Fortnite wants to keep its player base and not lose its competitive scene, action must be taken.

Planes

Planes are the single biggest item killing Fortnite. All the pro players and competitive players do not like them and want them taken out of the game. In a battle royale, mobility is good, but too much is very bad. Rewarding players with easy kills and super mobility destroys the skill gap. Players who have a plane do not need any knowledge of how to rotate, aim or build. Simply flying onto an enemy and spraying the turret gives players kills who do not deserve them.

Fortnite released a few details about their next patch on twitter, and planes were in the mix. The post reads that “Planes will no longer be able to smash through structures.” The change is a step in the right direction, but not the change that planes need. Smashing through structures is not the problem, the gun is. Since crashing through structures was nerfed, the plane took too much damage to do that anyway. Players can just spray buildings down and hop onto the enemy finishing them off. If planes are not sent to the vault season 8, Fortnite is in big trouble.

Hand Cannon

The hand cannon, or Deagle, is another weapon that destroys gameplay. The current meta without a Deagle puts the player at an incredible disadvantage. Since the Deagle can shoot through a wooden wall with one shot, it is the perfect follow weapon. With the shotgun Deagle method, it makes breaking into an enemy build and pumping them very easy. If a player can instantly break an enemy wall and replace it with a friendly wall, it becomes a ping battle. Players with better ping will place walls faster than those with high ping, giving them an advantage.

In Fortnite sneak peek patch notes, the Deagle is getting a nerf. “Hand Cannon structure damage reduced from 150 to 100.” This change means players cannot one shot through a wooden wall anymore. Now that the deagle will not be a battering ram, players without it will not feel at a disadvantage. This nerf brings back the meta of pump and submachine gun, making the meta more realistic. The heavy sniper will now be the only player held item that can destroy a wall in one shot.

RPG

The RPG is also getting a nerf in the upcoming 7.40 patch. “Rocket Launcher reload time increased from 2.52s to 3.24s.” On top of this change, rocket launchers will only be available out of vending machines and supply drops, not chests. This change is very much needed because rockets are everywhere. End game there is always an enemy with a rocket launcher shooting at builds. This makes it very easy for the enemy to run up on the player and spam rockets, get high ground and win the fight. Hopefully, this change will show positive results if the drop rate out of supply drops is not too high. Explosives are not very overpowered damage-wise, but Epic also needs to look into the double grenade launcher. This is not a common sight, but it is impossible to counter and almost always results in the enemy killing the player with this tactic. 12 grenades in nearly the same time as six, it is just too many to outbuild.
