Marwan “Wawa” Berthe wins the Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament at Evo 2022 and comes out on top against 635 other players.
After an already impressive year for Wawa, he has shown once again dominance in Dragon Ball FighterZ at Evo. Placing first in most of the major tournaments in 2022 alone, plus many others since 2019.
The Dragon Ball FighterZ Tournament at Evo took place from Aug. 5-6. However, the top 8 matches which began at 8 p.m. went on even beyond midnight. The Grand Finals between Wawa and “Nitro” were going on well past 1 a.m.
Despite how late the matches were, all the players gave it everything they can after hours of playing for a chance to win it all.
Many of the top 8 players at Evo were familiar players from the last major tournament the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Championship Finals for 2021-22. Including Wawa, Nitro, and other players like Shoji “Fenritti” Sho, “Yasha”, and Joan “Shanks” Namay Millones.
Wawa Vs Nitro
Both Wawa and Nitro were the two players to make it to the Grand Finals at the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Championship Finals as well. In both tournaments, Wawa was able to defeat Nitro in a single set.
The roles were reversed this time around as in the DBFZ World Championship Wawa was coming from the Winners bracket. Nitro in that instance was making his way through Losers after his defeat from Wawa in Semifinals. At Evo, due to coming from the Losers bracket, Wawa had to force a reset in the Grand Finals.
In the end, Wawa came out on top as the champion for Dragon Ball FighterZ with Nitro coming to a close second. While doing his best, Nitro lost his Android 21 (Lab Coat) early into the match and proceeded to not be able to take a character from Wawa in the final match.
Dragon Ball FighterZ Competetive Future
This marks Wawa’s first ever Evo Championship, but might not be his only one. While the developers confirm the game will no longer see any new updates, past the rollback update it might stick around longer.
Dragon Ball FighterZ has seen immense success, not only in the player base and the competitive scene. With some of the most active player base according to official steam charts and viewership, it’s likely it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
