Week four was a great time to roster the top running backs on your DFS lineups. Le’Veon Bell, Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley all scored more than 25 points. We also saw some great performances from players like Leonard Fournette, Lamar Miller and Bilal Powell. With week five on the horizon, let’s take a look at who we need to steer clear of in the running back edition of week five DFS don’ts.
Ty Montgomery: FanDuel Price $7,500
I know, you’re probably crushing me right now for choosing a player that’s publicly injured. But despite his condition, Ty Montgomery has a great matchup. Dallas has been allowing over 100 yards per game on the ground thus far. That includes games versus the Giants and Cardinals, two of the worst rushing teams in the NFL. So, with such a great matchup, why include him on my week five DFS don’ts list? The answer is simple, opportunity.
Montgomery’s injury is going to limit his opportunities dramatically. Montgomery has practiced this week, and has not been ruled out for the game this Sunday. If he is, then I’ll look like an idiot, but I digress. Both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones are active and are expected to get playing time. Montgomery’s workload will be too unpredictable.
Which player will be the first down back? Who will be the receiving back? Which player will get the goal line carries? The variables are way unpredictable for me to play Montgomery this week. Unless we get clarification on his health and role, he won’t be on any of my lineups.
Bilal Powell: FanDuel Price $6,600
You’re probably tired of the phrase, “don’t chase points”. Every week I have to say it or else I’ll just feel guilty knowing some poor soul will think Bilal Powell will produce like he did last week. In case you only look at the box score, Powell only scored on a run in which he fell down, no one touched him, and he got back up and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.
Everyone is looking at Powell thinking he is going to run circles around the Browns this Sunday. Don’t be so sure. The Browns will most likely get Danny Shelton, their nose tackle, and Myles Garrett, the number one overall pick. Cleveland’s run defense will no doubt benefit from the addition of Shelton and Garrett.
Powell’s workload isn’t guaranteed. Elijah McGuire has carved out a role with and without Matt Forte on the field. There is no certainty when it comes to Powell’s carries. However, he has solidified himself in the passing game, which elevates his floor. Overall, pay attention to Cleveland’s injuries. If both Shelton and Garrett are playing, spend your money elsewhere.
