With Week 5 on the horizon, let’s take a look at some underrated and risky fantasy football wide receiver options for this week. You can also check out my full fantasy football wide receiver rankings for Week 5.
Malik Nabers:
Nabers is coming off his best game of the season in Week 4 against the Cardinals, where he hauled in six catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. After a slow start to the season, largely due to his return from an ACL tear last year and the Giants‘ unfortunate switch at quarterback following Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury, Nabers finally seems to be back to his best.
Although Jameis Winston is about as hot-and-cold as quarterbacks come, the two seemed to have a great connection in Week 4, and they’ll look to continue that momentum against their divisional rivals, the Washington Commanders. The Commanders’ offense will likely improve if they get their QB1 back in Jayden Daniels, but their defense has surrendered 30-plus points in each of the last three games, making Nabers an underrated receiver option in fantasy this week.
Romeo Doubs:
Similarly to Nabers, Doubs also had his best game of the season in Week 4 against the Bills, where he had six receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Despite some truly lackluster offensive performances through four weeks, the Patriots‘ offense looked miles better last week against the Bills, and Doubs’ connection with Drake Maye certainly helped. The Patriots will be playing the 3-1 Raiders in Week 5, and I could see Doubs being a weapon for New England in the red zone, similar to last week. Consider giving Doubs the start in your fantasy league as the Patriots seek to get above .500 this week.
Michael Wilson:
I think Michael Wilson is primed to have one of his best games of the season against a Lions defense that has been absolutely shredded by the opposition this season. Wilson had a solid game against the Giants last week, hauling in seven catches for 95 yards. He’s been one of Jacoby Brissett’s favorite targets this season, and the Cardinals have the potential to have their best offensive game of the season against a Lions defense that is reeling and facing significant scrutiny at the moment. Wilson’s fantasy ceiling is extremely high this week in a favorable matchup for the Cardinals.
Mike Evans:
Evans is set to play in the 49ers‘ big divisional matchup against the Seahawks in Week 5 after dealing with a rib injury sustained in San Francisco’s Week 3 win. Despite playing through an injury, Evans had a good game last week, catching five passes for 76 yards in the 49ers’ win over the Broncos. Week 5 will be the 49ers’ toughest matchup yet, as they’re playing not only their divisional rivals but also the reigning Super Bowl champions in the Seahawks, who are 3-1.
Seattle has one of the deepest and strongest secondary units in the entire league, which could signal trouble for Evans this week. Despite Purdy and the 49ers’ red-hot momentum, I’d caution against starting Evans in fantasy this week.
Devaughn Vele:
Vele has been one of the most underrated receivers in the league through four weeks and is coming off another strong fantasy performance, where he had six catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. Vele has already established a strong connection with Tyler Shough this season, but the Saints will face one of the strongest defenses in the league this week in the Vikings. Minnesota has the No. 1 scoring defense in fantasy and hasn’t surrendered 20-plus points since Week 1 against the Packers, making Vele a risky fantasy option this week.
