Players to Target in ESPN Fantasy Football Drafts

Joe DiTullioBy Joe DiTullioAugust 12, 2020Updated:August 14, 20206 Mins Read

Fantasy football drafts are different based on the site that is being used. Players will eventually default to the host site’s rankings. This means if there are players that the host site is wrong about, an owner can pick them up at great value. With that being said, here are players to target in ESPN fantasy football drafts.

Note: This is best used for standard-scoring leagues. ESPN rankings can be found on this page.

Quarterbacks

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys- Prescott was second in fantasy points for quarterbacks last season. He had the second-most passing yards last year and also adds in the ability to run the ball, which boosts his fantasy value. The Cowboys have new head coach Mike McCarthy, which should help their offense be more productive. Prescott is ranked as the fifth overall quarterback on ESPN and could be a steal.

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills- Last season, Allen ranked sixth for fantasy quarterbacks. Much like Prescott, he brings his ability to throw and run. In 2018, Allen didn’t have the greatest supporting cast, so the Bills acquired Stefon Diggs to help. With Diggs in the linuep, Allen could have another big year, but ESPN dropped them in their rankings to be the 10th quarterback.

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers- Roethlisberger was hurt last season, but in 2018 he ranked third for fantasy quarterbacks. ESPN has him rated number 15 for quarterbacks this season, which is behind Daniel Jones. While Roethlisberger is a player who likely shouldn’t be a QB1, he should be snatched up before Jones.

Running Backs

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts- Taylor is one of the most productive running backs in all of college football history. The Colts drafted him in the second round because they plan to use him. He has speed, power and a great offensive line clearing holes in front of him. ESPN has Taylor ranked 23rd among running backs, but he has the potential to play well above that ranking.

Devin Singletary, Buffalo Bills- Last season, Singletary ranked 31st for running backs. The 2019 season included injuries and him splitting carries with Frank Gore. He played in 12 games, but had he played in all 16 he could’ve ranked at least 10 spots higher. The Bills did draft Zack Moss, but Singletary should get the majority of the work out of the backfield because he is more versatile.

Le’Veon Bell, New York Jets- ESPN has Bell ranked as the 22nd running back heading into the season. In 2019, Bell played in 15 games and had to deal with Sam Darnold getting mono at the start of the year, which allowed defenses to stack the box. If Darnold can stay healthy and keep defenses honest, Bell should finish in the top 20.

Cam Akers, Los Angeles Rams- The Rams decided to move on from Todd Gurley this offseason, which left the backfield without a real workhorse running back. They took Akers in the second round, so the Rams will likely have him take over the majority of the carries in the backfield once he gets comfortable. He’ll have to beat out Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson, which he should be able to do.

Matt Breida, Miami Dolphins- When given touches, Breida has shown the ability to produce. He has battled injuries and had to fight off other talented running backs in San Francisco. Now he is in Miami with only Jordan Howard looking to get a large number of carries outside of him. Breida can create big plays with his speed and his receiving ability. Last season he ranked 45th for running backs and that was in just 13 games. With more touches available in Miami and a healthy season, Breida could end up being a top 30 running back, especially if the offensive line additions play well for the Dolphins.

Wide Receivers

Keenan Allen, Los Angeles Chargers- Last year Allen ranked 11th for fantasy receivers, but ESPN believes that a new quarterback will alter his situation drastically. They have him ranked as the 20th ranked receiver for the upcoming season. Allen’s elite route-running ability should allow him to still produce as a top 15 receiver or so.

Odell Beckham Jr., Cleveland Browns- The 2019 season didn’t go as well as the Browns would’ve hoped and their top receiver, Beckham Jr., limped to a 31st finish for wide receivers. A lot of the same pieces are still in place, but Beckham Jr. should improve in 2020 because head coach Freddie Kitchens was fired and the offensive line was addressed heavily this offseason. Baker Mayfield should improve and so too should Beckham Jr.

DeVante Parker, Miami Dolphins- DeVante Parker had a fantastic 2019 season that saw him finish sixth for fantasy wide receivers. The Dolphins added a lot to their roster in both free agency and the draft, so whether the team starts Tua Tagovailoa or Ryan Fitzpatrick, they will be well supported. Parker can at least compete for a similar spot on this year’s rankings, but ESPN has him ranked all the way down at 28 for wide receivers.

Julian Edelman, New England Patriots- Earlier this offseason it looked like Edelman would be having a down 2020 season because of the quarterback situation. Then the Patriots signed Cam Newton. Newton can get the offense rolling and will need to utilize Edelman to be successful. Last year, Edelman ranked 13th for fantasy receivers. This year ESPN ranked him as the 36th overall receiver, but they may change when they update their rankings.

Tight Ends

Jared Cook, New Orleans Saints- Cook ranked as the sixth-best fantasy tight end in 2019 and he did it in just 14 games played. The Saints have Michael Thomas and the newly acquired Emmanuel Sanders, but Drew Brees will still heavily utilize a tight end if he has one. ESPN dropped him in their rankings to 10th, all the way behind players like Rob Gronkowski. Cook can be a steal late in drafts.

Austin Hooper, Cleveland Browns- Even before David Njoku requested a trade, ESPN had Hooper rated too low. He is ranked 14th despite ranking seventh last season in just 13 games played. Now that Njoku will likely not be on the roster, ESPN may change their ranking. Hooper will be a top 10 tight end if he can stay healthy.
