Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week, there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add in Week 6. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are rostered in less than 55 percent of ESPN leagues)
David Montgomery left the Texans’ game against the Titans in Week 5 with a groin injury. Woody Marks took over more of a full load in his place. He finished with 15 carries for 62 yards. Marks also added four catches for 23 yards, showing his ability to impact the game in multiple ways. It is being reported that Montgomery could miss some time with his injury. Marks will figure to get most of the work out of the backfield. The Texans only have four rushing touchdowns between Marks and Montgomery, but if Montgomery misses time, Marks should be able to find the end zone more frequently. Marks is rostered in just 48 percent of ESPN leagues.
The Packers placed Chris Brooks on IR with an injury, which allowed MarShawn Lloyd, Pierre Strong Jr. and Kaleb Johnson to split work out of the backfield. He wasn’t the most efficient runner, as he had 10 carries for 31 yards, but he found the end zone twice. Lloyd also had one catch for six yards. Lloyd outsnapped the rest of the running backs, as he had 27 plays to Strong’s 26. Strong may work his way more into the offense and vulture some touchdowns, but it seems that the Packers could continue using Lloyd the most out of the backfield moving forward. Lloyd is rostered in 48.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
Mason has been on IR with a fracture in his thumb. Aaron Jones has taken most of the work out of the backfield in Mason’s absence, but he also got banged up and returned in the Vikings’ Week 5 game. In Week 1, Mason had 15 carries for 59 yards and one touchdown. When he returns to the lineup, he should be expected to get a lot of work, if not the majority. The Vikings are on a bye in Week 6, but picking him up now and stashing him could lead to bigger rewards down the road. He is currently rostered in 51.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
Saquon Barkley is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, while backup Tank Bigsby is on IR with an abdomen injury. Will Shipley got the start against the Jaguars, but he left the game with a foot injury. Pierce was just signed, but handled the work the rest of the way. It wasn’t a great performance, as he had 11 carries for 14 yards, but he was used a lot in the second half. He had two catches for -2 yards as well. Checking the injury status of Barkley and Shipley will be critical to see how valuable Pierce could be in the short term. Adding Pierce in case Barkley and Shipley miss this week and waiting to see how things shake out would be beneficial. Pierce could be started in certain situations if Shipley and Barkley are out. He is rostered in 2.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
The Steelers had to place Michael Pittman on IR before Week 5. Bernard was more utilized in his place. He finished the game with six catches on nine targets for 80 yards. He also had one catch for four yards against the Colts for the best game of his young NFL career so far. While DK Metcalf will likely be the most productive receiver still, Bernard can carve out a nice role in the offense while Pittman is out. His ability to uncover underneath fits pretty well with how Aaron Rodgers can attack defenses these days, so he could really benefit. He is currently rostered in just three percent of ESPN games.
