Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 5. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are rostered in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Kareem Hunt, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
Kareem Hunt started the season as a free agent. He was signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad then was activated for their week 4 game against the Chargers. While he started the game off slow, he finished strong with 14 carries for 69 yards and two catches for 16 yards.
Isiah Pacheco will still be out for at least a few more weeks. The Chiefs’ backfield had a void and they started to fill it with Carson Steele on the early downs and Samaje Perine on passing downs. That flipped after Steele fumbled. Hunt looks like he should be the lead back in the Cheifs’ backfield until Pacheco returns. Hunt is rostered in just 21.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Trey Sermon, RB, Indianapolis Colts
Trey Sermon has just nine carries this season, but is now in line to get more work out of the backfield. Jonathan Taylor was injured in the week 4 game against the Steelers. Sermon filled in with five carries for eight yards.
Taylor suffered a high-ankle sprain in the game against the Steelers. While it is being reported as a minor injury, He could play, but it is likely that he will miss a few weeks. Sermon figures to be the lead back in his absence. Sermon is rostered in less than one percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Dontayvion Wicks, WR, Green Bay Packers
Wicks is one of a few talented Packers receivers. Christian Watson was injured in the week 4 game against the Vikings, giving Wicks more opportunity. He finished the game with five catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Watson has a high-ankle sprain and is expected to miss a few weeks, so those opportunities should continue to come in, even if he can’t match the 13 targets he received against the Vikings. With Jordan Love getting healthy, the Packers should be able to move the ball more through the air. Wicks can be picked up and played depending on the matchup and other receivers available to start. He is rostered in 9.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Xavier Legette, WR, Carolina Panthers
The Panthers inserted Andy Dalton in at quarterback and the offense has picked up. Adam Thielen was out for the week 4 game against the Bengals and Legette ran with the opportunity. He finished the game with six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Thielen is on IR, so he’ll at least miss a few weeks. Legette could fill the role of WR2 nicely for the Panthers in that time. It seems like he is building a rapport with Dalton and could see his targets increase as time goes on. He can be picked up and stashed until he develops more. Legette is rostered in just 25 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Josh Downs, WR, Indianapolis Colts
Anthony Richardson went down with an injury against the Steelers. Joe Flacco entered the game and seemed to have a good connection with Josh Downs. Downs finished the game with eight catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Richardson’s injury is not expected to be serious. Downs was only active for weeks 3 and 4 of the season so far, so it remains to be seen how well he’ll play with Richardson at quarterback. He can be picked up and stashed while the two show what they can do together. Downs is rostered in 8.8 percent of ESPN leagues.
