Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 5. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Jaleel McLaughlin, RB, Denver Broncos
In week 4, Javonte Williams went down with a hip injury. McLaughlin was able to step in and was productive. He finished the game with seven carries for 72 yards. He also had three catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.
With Williams not set to miss much time, McLaughlin is a short-term add. He has impressed early in the season and could carve out a role more long-term with his opportunity. Adding him now allows managers to see how things shake out with his playing time and Williams’s injury. He is rostered in just 0.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Romeo Doubs, WR, Green Bay Packers
There were a lot of doubts surrounding the Packers’ offense this season. One player who has exceeded expectations is Romeo Doubs. He is currently ranked as the 15th fantasy receiver in standard-scoring leagues. For the season he has 20 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns.
Christian Watson has had trouble staying healthy and Doubs has been a consistent target for Jordan Love. Doubs is worth adding and starting the way he is currently playing. He is currently available in 66 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Gus Edwards, RB, Baltimore Ravens
Gus Edwards has been on this list before, but still deserves consideration to be picked up. He saw a lot of work in week 4. Edwards had 15 carries for 48 yards. He also had two catches for one yard. It wasn’t his best game, but the workload is impressive.
Edwards and Justice Hill will likely split carries going forward, but Hill is banged up. The Ravens’ offense can support two running backs being rostered. Edwards is effective when he gets touches. He is rostered in 45.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Josh Palmer, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Mike Williams was lost for the season with an injury. Keenan Allen is the number one target. The number two receiver isn’t rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston, but rather Josh Palmer. In week 4, he had three catches for 77 yards against the Raiders.
Palmer’s role should increase in the coming weeks. The Chargers are on a bye in week 5, but Palmer can be stashed now before he has a really big game after the bye. He is rostered in just 46.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Michael Wilson, WR, Arizona Cardinals
Wilson has continually improved over the course of the season. The rookie is becoming a go-to target for Josh Dobbs. He has 14 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns on the season. In week 4, Wilson tallied seven catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
If Wilson keeps on improving at this rate, he won’t just be rosterable, he could be startable. It is best to pick him up now before that point, as the Cardinals’ offense is doing better than expected. He is rostered in just 1.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
