Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 4. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are rostered in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Cam Akers, RB, Houston Texans
With Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce inactive, Cam Akers got most of the work out of the Texans’ backfield. Despite the Texans trailing for most of the game, Akers tallied nine carries for 21 yards. He also had a reception for eight yards and a touchdown.
Mixon had an ankle injury in week 2, which will likely take a few weeks to heal. Akers can be added for week 4, but Mixon’s status needs to be monitored before starting him. He is a pickup that is worth rostering until Mixon returns from injury. Akers is rostered in just 35.1 percent fo ESPN leagues.
2. Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Irving had the best game of his young career in week 3. The rookie had nine carries for 70 yards and also hauled in three catches for 14 yards. He has been getting a lot of work out of the backfield already this season and his role could grow because he has been successful.
With the Bucs trailing the Broncos, they gave Irving more snaps as a passing-down back. His role could increase if he continues to play well, although he’ll have to battle it out with Rachaad White. Adding Irving can be done this week and then started if he starts getting more of a workload. He is rostered in 32.8 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Jauan Jennings, WR, San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have had some injuries to the wide receiver position and needed someone to step up in week 3. Jennings ended up answering the call. He got some run in weeks 1 and 2, but had the best game of his career in week 3 with 11 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns.
Jennings did well with his opportunity, as the 49ers were without both Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. While these players aren’t expected to be out long-term, Jennings could carve out a role when they players come back. The 49ers have had injury issues at the skill positions before, so Jennings could help fill the gaps if more injuries happen. He is rostered in just 36 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Quentin Johnston, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Johnston has been having a great season after underwhelming as a rookie. He is the 12th-ranked fantasy receiver in standard scoring leagues. In week 3 against the Steelers, Johnston tallied two catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
While his volume of catches and targets isn’t the greatest, his ability to find the end zone makes him worth a pickup. If he keeps earning the trust of Justin Herbert, Johnston can end being worth starting. He is rostered in just 42.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Justin Fields, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Fields has gone 3-0 as the starter for the Steelers, which has given him job security. He hasn’t had the best games as a real-life quarterback, but has done enough to win. Fields is a better fantasy quarterback because of his legs. Week 3 was his best passing day with 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Currently, Fields is the 15th-ranked running back in fantasy football. He found the end zone against the Chargers in week 3 on the ground for the first time of the season, which bolsters his scoring. That will likely happen more often in the future. He is rostered just 24.1 percent of ESPN leagues.
