Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 3. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Jerome Ford, RB, Cleveland Browns
On Monday Night Football, Nick Chubb went down with a gruesome injury. Jerome Ford came into the game and was extremely productive. He finished the game with 16 carries for 106 yards. Ford also totaled three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown.
While it isn’t official, based on the looks of the injury, Chubb is likely done for the season. Ford showed he can be productive behind a solid Browns offensive line and can be picked up and started. The Browns are at their best when they run the football and Ford can be a good pickup this week. He is available in over 90 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Zack Moss, RB, Indianapolis Colts
Moss was injured with a broken arm and missed the preseason and week 1. He returned to the lineup in week 2 and proved that he was the go-to back (for now) in the Colts offense. Moss had 18 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown. He added four receptions for 19 yards.
To make things more clear that the Colts would be going with Moss out of the backfield, he played virtually all the snaps out of the backfield. Jonathan Taylor is coming off of the PUP list after week 4. It still remains to be seen whether he will suit up or wait for a trade. In the meantime, Moss can be picked up and started. He is rostered in just 32.1 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Gus Edwards, RB, Baltimore Ravens
In week 1, J.K. Dobbins was injured and ruled out for the season. The Ravens turned the backfield over to Justice Hill and Gus Edwards. While they split carries, Edwards was the more productive of the two backs in week 2. He finished the game with 10 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Edwards also had three catches for 12 yards.
The backfield will probably continue to be split between the two backs. In the past, Edwards has been favored. Even though Hill had more carries in week 2, Edwards could be the play moving forward. Both are rostered in about 30 percent of ESPN leagues, so pick up Hill if Edwards isn’t available.
4. Matt Breida, RB, New York Giants
In their week 2 comeback against the Cardinals, Saquon Barkley got banged up. He is scheduled for an MRI on Monday to see how much time to be missed. While Daniel Jones will do some of the rushing, there will be a new lead back for the time that Barkley is out.
Breida is the backup to Barkley on the depth chart. He has just three carries and one catch on the season, but the Giants don’t make a habit out of taking Barkley off the field very often. If Barkley misses time, Breida will get a lot of work, especially given the short week, as the Giants play on Thursday Night Football against the 49ers. Breida is available in almost 99 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. TuTu Atwell, WR, Los Angeles Rams
Last week, two different Rams players were waiver-wire pickups. Puka Nacua has had a great start to the season and so too has Kyren Williams. Both players were picked up in mass last week. This week, the Rams had another player who stood out: Tutu Atwell. Atwell had seven catches for 77 yards in week 2.
Atwell and Nacua both have had success in the absence of Cooper Kupp. They both have shown that they can get a good amount of targets in the offense, at least for now. Things may change when Kupp returns from injury, but Atwell provides value now. He is rostered in 31.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
