Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 2. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
It was rumored that the Eagles would split carries between their running backs this season. That didn’t seem to be the case in week 1, as Gainwell got most of the work. He finished the game with 14 carries for 54 yards and four receptions for 20 yards.
There is still the threat of Rashaad Penny or D’Andre Swift cutting into his workload. That is on top of Jalen Hurts taking some of the rushing opportunities. For now, he seems like the back to roster and his workload makes him worth starting if things remain the same. He is available in over 78 percent of ESPN leagues.
Ravens’ starting running back JK Dobbins tore his Achilles in their week 1 game against the Houston Texans. Edwards was likely to get some work before the injury, but his workload increased after Dobbins left the game. He finished the game with eight carries for 32 yards.
While Justice Hill was the running back who found the end zone, Edwards is the one who will likely be counted on moving forward. They each had eight carries in week 1 and Edwards had more yards. The Ravens’ backfield is a situation to monitor, as Melvin Gordon will likely be activated from the practice squad, but for now Edwards is the best bet to get the work. He is rostered in just 21.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
While Cam Akers saw plenty of work too, Williams surprisingly saw a good amount of work. He had 15 carries for 52 yards and found the end zone twice. Williams actually had more touches than Akers early in the game before Akers helped the Rams kill the clock.
It looked like the Rams were favoring Williams over Akers early in the game. The Rams have had their issues with Akers in the past and it looks like Williams may be the back of the future for them. Williams can be added for now, but maybe wait on starting him until the dust settles a little more. He is rostered in just 10.2 percent of ESPN leagues.
With Cooper Kupp out injured, the Rams had to find different targets for Matthew Stafford. They drafted Nacua in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. While getting drafted that late usually doesn’t lead to immediate production, Nacua stepped up in week 1. Against the Seahawks, he finished with 10 catches for 115 yards.
While his involvement in the offense may change once Kupp returns, there is no date mentioned yet when that might be. Nacua could see plenty of targets over the next few weeks. He is worth picking up, but take a wait-and-see approach about starting him. Nacua is available in over 97 percent of ESPN leagues.
As mentioned earlier, J.K. Dobbins went down with an Achilles injury in week 1. While Gus Edwards was expected to get more of the work out of the backfield, Hill was productive too. He had eight carries for nine yards and two touchdowns.
After a good week 1 performance that saw him vulture some touchdowns, it is worth to see if this trend can continue. The Ravens have shown over the years that they can support more than one running back, so adding Hill could still have some upside. He is available in over 99 percent of ESPN leagues.
