Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are five players to add in fantasy football week 14.
(Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Cam Akers, RB, Los Angeles Rams
It has taken a long time, but Cam Akers has finally taken over in the backfield for the Rams. In week 12 he had nine carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. He followed that performance up with 21 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown. Akers also had one catch for 22 yards.
The 21 carries he received in week 13 is pretty telling in what the Rams want to do for the rest of the year. A lot of people dropped Akers after he didn’t produce, but it looks like his time is now. Akers is owned in 35.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Ty Johnson, RB, New York Jets
La’Mical Perine was injured and Frank Gore went out of the game with a concussion in week 13. Ty Johnson stepped up big time in their absence. He had 22 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Johnson also had two catches for 13 yards.
It is worth watching the injury report this week for the Jets. If both Perine and Gore are out, Johnson is worth the pickup. Even if one comes back, Johnson may have earned himself some more opportunities for the rest of the season. He is owned in less than one percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Adrian Peterson, RB, Detroit Lions
The Lions’ backfield has been a tough one to figure out. D’Andre Swift has not played due to a concussion and may not be able to come back quite yet. Kerryon Johnson, their other young running back, has taken limited snaps. Veteran Adrian Peterson has played well in the last few weeks. He has two-straight 17-point performances in standard scoring leagues.
Peterson figures to keep getting work while he is running the ball so well. The good news for Peterson is that this week, the Lions play the Packers, who have a bad run defense. He can be added and played this week, as he should have a big day. Peterson is owned in 36.2 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Keke Coutee, WR, Houston Texans
With Will Fuller out for the season because of PED use, other players have had to step up. Keke Coutee was one of the players who really played well in Fuller’s absence against the Colts in week 13. He finished the game with eight catches for 141 yards.
It looks like Coutee will receiver at least a share of the targets that were going to Fuller. Coutee should be picked up as the Texans continue to figure out their offense without Fuller. He is currently owned in 12.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. T.Y. Hilton, WR, Indianapolis Colts
The Colts now have two fantasy receivers worth owning after Michael Pittman has emerged. Their passing offense has utilized T.Y. Hilton in the last few weeks as well. He had four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown in week 12. In week 13, Hilton had eight catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Can the Colts continue to have two productive wide receivers? That’s a tough question to answer, but Hilton can be added for the time being while more evidence is revealed one way or another. Hilton is owned in just below 50 percent of ESPN leagues.
