Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are five players to add in fantasy football week 10. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Duke Johnson, RB, Houston Texans
David Johnson went into concussion protocol after getting injured in the fourth quarter of their game against the Jaguars on Sunday. Duke Johnson was able to fill in well with 41 rushing yards, 32 receiving yards and one touchdown.
It will be worth monitoring David’s injury status this week, but Duke should be added. If David can’t go, Duke could be played this weekend when the Texans play the Browns. Duke is owned in just 16.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Kalen Ballage, RB, Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have had injury problems at the running back position. They have started to give Kalen Ballage more opportunities, as he had 15 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also added two receptions for 15 yards.
Austin Ekeler is eligible to return from the injured reserve, so that could cut into Ballage’s effectiveness. Ekeler has resumed running, but there is no word on whether Ekeler will play in week 10 or how much he will be able to do. Ballage is still worth picking up if Ekeler is unable to play again. He is available in virtually every ESPN league.
3. Cordarrelle Patterson, RB, Chicago Bears
Although he started his career as a wide receiver, Patterson has made the move to running back with the Bears. He is going to be needed this week, as Tarik Cohen has a knee injury and David Montgomery is in the concussion protocol.
While he has only produced a maximum of three points in standard-scoring formats, this will be his biggest opportunity yet. He should get a lot of work when the Bears play the Vikings this week. Patterson is owned in just three percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Jordan Howard, RB, Miami Dolphins
With Myles Gaskin on IR, Jordan Howard received 10 carries against the Cardinals. He only produced 19 yards, but he did find the end zone. Howard shouldn’t be expected to pick up a lot of yards, but he should be added as a player who is often utilized at the goal line.
With Gaskin on IR, Howard will compete for carries with Salvon Ahmed, who outrushed him on just seven carries. Even with Ahmed taking carries, Howard should still get the goal line work. He is available in 60 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Curtis Samuel, WR, Carolina Panthers
Curtis Samuel is on fire the last few weeks. He has scored 10, 17 and 17 points respectively over the last three weeks in standard-scoring formats. The Panthers have used Samuel well as both a receiver and a runner, which helps make him more valuable.
While Christian McCaffrey returning to the lineup will take away opportunities from Samuel, he still produced against the Chiefs with him in the lineup. Samuel is worth adding, but he is only worth playing based on the matchup. Samuel is owned in 42.2 percent of ESPN leagues.
