Evolution of artificial intelligence in computer games: how do NPCs become smarter?

Publish Date: January 22, 2025

Artificial intelligence is one of the latest technologies in gaming. Although it has revolutionized most of the industries, it has brought out the most substantial change in gaming industry. Non-player characters (NPCs), old-fashioned deterministic and formless beings, have now progressively evolved into intelligent and smart ones. Along the way, this progress, however, has resulted in many advances in how games are developed so that players have realistic, responsive, and convincing experiences, and more engaging challenges.

However, what part has AI development contributed to the development of NPC behaviors in computer games? But what does that reveal about its potential future impact on gaming? In this text, we will explore the evolution of AI in games and how it continues to transform virtual worlds.

The Early Days of NPC AI in Gaming

The development of NPCs started from the simplest programmed behavior in games. Titles such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders can be referred to as pioneers of NPCs with programmed behavior scripts. This was non-adaptive behavior, game characters responded according to their fixed programme by obeying pre-determined rules and it was therefore easy for players to outwit them.

Among the earliest successes in NPC artificial intelligence was the establishment of the finite state machines (FSM) which enabled NPCs to have different states, e.g., “patrolling” or “attacking” or “fleeing”. This gave the illusion of intelligence and created game depth. A characteristic of its implementation was its use in Doom (1993), an iconic game in gaming industry. In Doom, opponents exhibited simple decision making, e.g., player pursuit following detection. Nevertheless, although these mechanisms were novel to the time, they were not truly intelligent (i.e., adaptable to new sensory information) or intelligent (i.e., redundant with the corresponding plant production mechanism) at all. As new technologies emerged, this field continued to evolve, constantly improving the gaming environment and NPC behavior.

Machine Learning and the Rise of Smarter NPCs

Machine learning (ML) has revolutionized NPC generation with its introduction. In contrast to a traditional programmed behaviour, in which behaviour is preprogrammed, such that an NPC acts in a predictable manner, ML allows NPCs to “learn and adapt” through data analyses. Games such as “Halo” used AI which could change an opponent’s behaviour in relation to the user’s action to provide a more realistic, random user experience.

An interesting case study of high level NPC intelligence is GTA V, a title that enjoys one of the greatest reputations on the market. There are many characters in the game, from everyday urban dwellers to starring NPCs. Observing the NPCs or reading about them in cs news, you’ll notice they move like real people, making it hard to tell at first glance that their actions are programmed. These innovations demonstrate how machine learning (ML) has enabled NPCs to become more believable agents.

Moreover, reinforcement learning, a subset of ML, has enabled NPCs to optimize their behavior over time. In strategic games, such as StarCraft II, AI agents trained using reinforcement learning are now capable of achieving results beyond human players, demonstrating their capacity to learn from millions of simulations and improve their strategies.

How Neural Networks Are Reshaping NPC Intelligence

Neural networks, a form of artificial intelligence resembling the human brain, have opened new horizons for NPC development. With the ability to process huge volumes of data, these networks allow us to give NPCs decision-making behaviours which are increasingly natural and human-like. This is particularly noticeable in current RPGs and open world games.

For example, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim introduced NPCs with schedules, relationships, and the ability to react to player actions long ago. These same characteristics were taken and adapted in Cyberpunk 2077, one of the consequences being that NPCs dynamically walk the city, react to what is happening in the environment and they interact with players in real time.

Another excellent example among renowned titles is Red Dead Redemption 2 or Detroit: Become Human. In these games, artificial intelligence governs many characters, allowing them to remember player actions, build relationships, and adapt their behavior based on past encounters. Actions of the players play an important role in determining the course of the game, providing depth and immersion to the play.

Integration of AI Across Multiplayer and Competitive Games

AI is no longer limited to single-player games and has begun to be widely used in multiplayer genres. In multiplayer games, artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in enhancing enemy strength, providing training tools, and ensuring fair matchmaking. For instance, in competitive games like Counter-Strike 2, AI is represented by bots, allowing players to improve their skills by playing against them.

The game offers several difficulty levels for bot matches, ranging from very easy to extremely challenging—levels that not every player can handle. This variety is incredibly useful, enabling players to customize their gameplay experience and train more effectively.

Conclusion

Gathering all the facts, it is clear that the evolution of artificial intelligence in gaming has transformed NPCs from simple and rudimentary characters into intelligent, realistic companions and opponents. Since the earliest works to the contemporary applications of machine learning and neural networks, AI has brought forth hitherto unprecedented possibilities for interactive narrative and immersive gameplay.

However, as NPCs grow smarter, it becomes most urgent to find the right mix of technological advancement and ethical implications, in order to guarantee a future for games that is at once stimulating and responsible. As this field continues to evolve, the next decade in the gaming world holds the promise of even more radical innovation.
