Team Boxr, a team started by Counter Strike: Global Offensive commentator Mohan “launders” Govindasamy, signed Julian “Zhu” Zhu as the team’s first official signing, according to Jacob Wolf of ESPN Esports. Zhu has previously gone as a free agent to most tournaments in 2016.
Team BOXR’s owners, launders, has a unique perspective coming from the CS:GO community. The team based-shooter requires an entirely different mindset than a one-vs-one fighting game. He understands his audience and that signing players is not only about tournament performance.
Zhu is a longstanding member in the Melee community. He’s the victim in the most famous Melee video ever produced, “the wombo combo.” He also started SmashPractice, a Youtube series he produces with Charles “Cactuar” Meighen, as a way to teach players.
Launders, as a content creator himself, understands how important of an element that is when signing a player. Zhu is valuable both in and out of tournaments. The Melee streams still aren’t close to the level of League of Legends or CS:GO viewership, with Joseph “Mango” Marquez being the only consistent streamer to get large numbers.
