In accordance with rumors posted by ESPN writer Jacob Wolf, the Overwatch League formally announced two new teams in a press release on Thursday. Guangzhou, China, and Atlanta, Georgia are the first two teams to join the League for Season 2.
The new teams join the league at a reported cost of $30-60 million. Rosters, logos, and more info will be available Soon™, according to Blizzard.
The Guangzhou team is owned and operated by the Nenking Group (owned by Chinese billionaire Zhong Naixiong.) Naixiong’s new OWL team joins the Guangzhou Long Lions basketball team, which are part of the Chinese Basketball Association.
Atlanta-based media conglomerate Cox Enterprises has secured the first American expansion team. Cox also owns a Major League Soccer team, the Atlanta United. In 2017, the company made more than $20 billion in revenue.
“We know Atlanta and Guangzhou have deeply engaged fan communities and we can’t wait to unveil their teams,” said Nate Nanzer, commissioner of the Overwatch League. “As the league continues to grow, we’re looking forward to seeing more talented pros in action as more roster spots open up.”
