Will Overwatch 2 have a story mode?

Publish Date: May 23, 2023

Blizzard announced that they’re essentially dropping their initial visions for Overwatch 2’s PVE mode. In essence, the game won’t have the skill tree progression that the game was originally marketed for. This then begs the question, will Overwatch 2 still have a story mode?

Overwatch 2 won’t have the story mode that they originally marketed, but will instead have story driven missions. In other words, there will still be PvE content releasing for the game, with many of the missions likely being story driven.

But this is completely different from an overarching story mode, which was originally marketed to have endless replay ability. This means the RPG elements for the PvE will, for the most part, be scrapped.

The game’s missions and PvE content will likely allow players to cooperate with each other while being given relatively strict parameters. And the missions themselves may have story relevance, therefore providing relevant lore for the Overwatch universe. This may be done through cut scenes, in game dialogue, and participating in missions and fights that connect to the story.

But as for the continued story, it’s unlikely that the progression and success achieved in each PvE mission will have any direct or impact on the following story related missions. This means it won’t necessarily have a “story mode,” since the developers have made it quite clear they’re opting for the PvE mission format that was prevalent in Overwatch 1.

Given one of the biggest marketing factors for Overwatch 2 was the story mode, which was supposed to have skill trees and continued progression, this is a big disappointment. Of course, there is still time for the developers to take back their decision to drop the original premise of the marketed story mode. But considering the recent announcements, such a possibility would be hoping for an unlikely outcome.
